This reminds me of a podcast (an episode of This American Life maybe) where one of the reporters talks about being surprised when someone mentions Nazi’s in The Sound of Music because they only ever saw up to the intermission and thought that was the entire movie.

This has become a standard on analog clocks and watches (presumably to avoid confusion with VI), but for some reason IX and XI (for 9 and 11 respectively) is fine.
Personally I’d like to see IX and IIIIIIIIIII.
ETA: I guess IX and XI are ‘fine’ because they’re not upside down, but my point still stands.
The Knight special is obviously the passive ability to jump over other pieces.
I discovered that much of my problem was the stock ink that came in it; it felt terrible to write with. I ended up ordering a Parker Jotter and replacement ink, so I’m trying both out to decide which I like better. I think I like the form of the Jotter better, but it’s quite small and light. I like the weight of the rotring 600 more. I think I’m going to try both out and return one of them. Or just keep them both, I haven’t quite decided yet.
I got one yesterday and I’m thinking about returning it. It feels very underwhelming. I expected higher quality.
My understanding is mostly a bird flu but also inflation.

I was curious so I looked it up. Guess it’s a card from Commander Masters - I had never seen it before.

Chess@lemmy.ml•Time to change this? Gukesh is the world champion baby!
2·1 year agoPretty sure they’re referencing the trophy icon being next to Ding still, not the actual ratings of the players.
Edit: Although I could be wrong. I’m a bit confused why it’s the September 2023 ratings that they posted.

Edit: Editing this 3 months later because this is my most recent comment and the typo is haunting me.

Movies@lemmy.world•Have you ever been to a movie so terrible that you saw people leaving the theater? Which one was it?English
2·2 years agoI imagine they mean M. Night’s 2010 movie, The Last Airbender. I thought this was pretty obvious, but upon Googling learned that his film was not called Avatar: The Last Airbender like the show is.
Apple Music is more in-line with Spotify. You can’t buy music through it; it’s for streaming only.

I think Mint is better out of the box than it used to be. I was on it maybe 5 or 6 years ago and had to troubleshoot a few issues, but I just came back to it a few months ago and everything worked flawlessly out of the box.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?
3·2 years agoI’m relatively new to Mint, but I thought that sudo apt update just checked for updates and sudo apt upgrade -y was for actually installing the updates. I don’t see why that would break it though.
Mayonnaise@lemm.eeto[Dormant, please move to [email protected]] Movies and TV Shows@lemm.ee•[Discussion] Do you have franchise fatigue? Or is there still a franchise that you enjoy seeing?
2·2 years agoRegarding the Marvel movies, I’ve slowly been working through them because I missed the bus when they were big and only saw a handful here and there (Doctor Strange, Guardians Vol 1 and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies, which are actually pretty good).
I made it past the first Avengers movies and I think they start getting better after Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, but oh my gosh if the majority of the movies up to and including the first Avengers aren’t incredibly mid at best. I think watching them after all of the hype as they were coming out loses some of the charm, and I have to give props to what they accomplished creating a Cinematic Universe. But they are just so whatever.
Just kind of rambling, but the whole MCU seems to be incredibly over-saturated and I would be amazed if they are able to continue to carry popularity even close to what they had leading up to Endgame.
The one I have you can set temperature that it heats to and tell it to either hold that temperature or get to it and then it’ll just cool off if you don’t use it. It has more settings but I’ve just had it set to 194 for forever.
I will say that I swear I spent closer to $50-60 for mine but it’s at like $105 on Amazon right now which is absurd. But looking at the price history on camelcamelcamel the price really has climbed a bit over the past few years. It used to drop around $60-70 a bit. Ridiculous how expensive things are getting.
I’ve had a bonavita electric kettle for 5+ years and it’s been great. I just use it for heating up water ~daily and have zero complaints (not sure if there is anything else that you would be looking for an electric kettle to do). I’m pretty sure it was like $50 on Amazon.

It literally said in the linked post that this isn’t the case…
