The past year has seen an explosion in new text to speech engines based on neural networks, large language models, and machine learning. But has any of this advancement offered anything to those using screen readers?

If the author specifically wants a 2003 MacOS synthetic voice, then surely it can’t be that hard to just use an old Mac as a hardware speech synthesizer and pipe the text from whatever computer to it?
There was a point in time when using hardware synthesizers was the norm…
