Geez for someone with such incredible powers of reading comprehension, how did you miss that.
And we’re too far in the thread for anyone to follow but yes, the people I’m talking about (not “to” - “about”. Okay? You were a little wobbly there so just wanted to clarify that) are in this thread. by Optional@lemmy.worldreason: ... |

| 15 days ago | mod | Removed Comment Flaccid thrust? Mm. Let’s move on then.
>You're saying that you're not wrong because in some other communities (vaguely hand-waving to all of social media on the planet) there are comments that make what you wrote in this post not look like a failure to comprehend the English language?
No. I’m not saying all social media on the planet. I don’t know how _you’re_ getting here, but I’m on a platform called “Lemmy”. This conversation is being held in something called a “thread”, which is part of a larger set of comments and conversations that make up what is termed a “post”.
That “post”, in turn, is part of something called a “community”. I hope you’re with me so far because this next bit is mind-blowing. There are *other* “communities” here on Lemmy. And what’s even more fantastic is that those other communities are absolutely filled with other “posts”, “threads”, and “comments” much the way this one is!
Wild, isn’t it. I encourage you to venture beyond the staid confines of this particular “post” and investigate some of the other “communities” which make up this platform. by Optional@lemmy.worldreason: rule 5 |

>If you will kindly direct your awe-inspiring mind to many of the communities and comments where this particular news item is being posted and discussed, I think you cannot fail to notice that almost all of the comments do not grasp the critical distinction that you have so easily derived from the text.
I'm just making sure I understand the flaccid thrust of your argument.
You're saying that you're not wrong because in some other communities (vaguely hand-waving to all of social media on the planet) there are comments that make what you wrote in this post not look like a failure to comprehend the English language?
You're writing a comment here, to attack positions that people take elsewhere? Well, pardner, I think mayhaps you should take your comments to those places instead. by FauxLiving@lemmy.worldreason: rule 5 |
| 15 days ago | mod | Removed Comment Kudos to your outstanding comprehension of the written word. Surely it is a great responsibility to maintain a modest self-awareness when in possession of such great power. Again, congratulations.
If you will kindly direct your awe-inspiring mind to many of the communities and comments where this particular news item is being posted and discussed, I think you cannot fail to notice that almost all of the comments *do not* grasp the critical distinction that you have so easily derived from the text.
It is to the point that one might wonder if in fact most people, who doubtless fail to rise to your inestimable genius of interpreting printed matter, are not aware of said distinction when unleashing their odoriferous ink sac effluence of negativity onto the entirety of the only national party able to rein in this fascist exercise in porcine corruption.
I say, that they do not. by Optional@lemmy.worldreason: rule 5 |
| 15 days ago | mod | Removed Comment I'm aware enough to process English sentences before I type and as a native English speaker I understand the difference between 'Democrats who voted for ICE' and 'Democrats' when used in written English.
Specifically the fact that there is a defining clause which any native English speaker would read and understand to be referring to a specific subset of Democrats and not all Democrats.
So, to a native English speaker this makes no sense:
>Wait - so 7 of 212 Democrats voted for this abhorrence and “Democrats” voted to fund ICE?
It reads like you're taking issue with a strawman position so you can vomit some outrage into the comments... not a response to the words that were written in the post. by FauxLiving@lemmy.worldreason: rule 5 |
| 15 days ago | mod | Removed Comment Yeah this is the only fucking article about it. Except for the other one right above it and the three others posted in the last day. All of them explicitly state _seven_ Democrats voted for ICE.
