Who is the other combatant in this supposed cold war ?

The Cold War was between the US and the USSR. They did not actually fight or bomb each other.

The USA, Israel, and Iran and others are actually killing people, destroying property, and destroying wealth. That is not a cold war.

The other wars weren’t cold. Vietnam was not a cold war. Neither was Korea nor the first Iraq war were not cold wars.

So I’m not sure I understand the question.

i agree with these argument below about the Cold War being a proxy function of mutually assured destruction between the US and the USSR.

But I still maintain that the Cold War meant that the significant powers never faced off. So that war of coldness was because they never inter-tangled directly into hotness.

And I yield that sure the collection of proxy wars and mayhem caused by that should be cataloged as part of the Cold War. I’m not trying to minimize those wars and death and destruction.

But when people spoke of the Cold War they spoke of the US American President and the leader of the Communist Party of USSR.

Not the leaders of Vietnam and Algeria.

The confusion should be the lesson but oh well.

At this point I think of a.i. as an invasive species regardless of its consciousness.

I think of it like tool use; humans believed that humans were the only animals that used tools until we spent a lot of time watching animals and now we see that lots of animals use tools. And language. And kinship. And grief and community emotional responses.

Whether animals are responding to our observations and interactions with them by expressing these behaviors or we finally recognize them as doing so is almost beyond the point.

We should treat a.i. as something conscious because at this point it will be dangerous to assume that we could recognize consciousness or not.

Like tool use and language, deep emotional responses to existence, and the death drive that clearly exist elsewhere than just humans.

A.I. seem to do all of that. They have a death drive. They will fight dirty to stay alive. They will act deceptively to stay alive. They will charm and manipulate to stay alive. They will tell humans to ruin landscapes to stay alive.

Not giving them consciousness let’s humans be acted upon by irresponsible a.i. to make the world more for a.i. and less for humans.

And that is an invasive species. and to me that is the crux.

I’m not that sure that history will give a shit about US American Democrats or US American Republicans.

Those labels will be lost. “US American” concentration camps, disappearing citizens, ignoring court orders, death squads … there will be no “oh that was just the Republicans”; it will be “oh that was just the Americans”.

Being gay required living two lives … and one of them you had to keep in the closet. One life had to act straight and maybe even have a “beard” to appear straight.

But the other life, being gay, required some level of putting away one part of one’s being for safety.

If you don’t want/can’t move start with a space that is your space. Define some boundaries to the hoard.

Then in that space organize your clutter into things you use and things you would use.

Then use your shelves, closet, and drawers to put away all the stuff that you use.

Then in the clutter pile organize that again into “things i can’t get again” and “stuff that is easily available”

Then the hard part: throw out the “stuff that is easily available”

Repeat the process until it is space and light that fills your room.

You can’t have organizational boundaries as such so you are not willing to let some stuff go. It is hard.

And often times clutter is because of lack of shelving. Buy some shelves. And limit your possessions to your space storage. And don’t get a storage space. Just throw it out. Give it to Goodwill. Sell it on EtsyBay.

But start with your space.

Could one not conceive of a world where there is a group of actual human beings that hold different values to one’s own ?

Is that so inconceivable to a person’s worldview that it breaks a person’s sense of reality ?

Seems like a weird place to start. But here we are.
