Did you know if you took the all intestines of a person and laid them out end to end, that person would die?

“Tuna fish” is a phase used primarily for canned tuna, but not for the live fish or things like tuna steak. It’s because when canned tuna was created in the US in the early 1900’s people who were not right next to the sea (like the majority of the US) did not know what “tuna” was. Firstly, the word is a of Spanish origin and secondly, its a salt water only fish. So in order to sell this to middle America, which was where most of the consumers were at the time but was also made up of people who have never seen the ocean, they added the word “fish” to show like other tinned fish that was commonly purchased: codfish, bluefish, and whitefish, this is also a fish and that is what you can expect when you open this can.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mozilla’s new CEO is doubling down on an AI future for FirefoxEnglish
44·2 months agoEnzor-DeMeo says will offer users their choice of model and product, all in a browser they can understand and from a company they can trust. “We’re not incentivized to push one model or the other,” he says. “So we’re going to try to go to market with multiple models.”
As long as it doesn’t become something that is forcibly pushed in to everything I do with the browser and my actions on the browser aren’t available to the LLM they go with, which it sounds like it won’t be, I don’t care if an AI agent exists in the software I use. Though I do feel like the working hours for this could be used in a better way, I’d love to see PWA’s come to Firefox for Linux, as an example.

Games@lemmy.world•Steam Hardware [new Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and VR headset Steam Frame, coming in 2026]English
5·3 months agoAll I got to say is that the new Steam controller better link to devices as a controller and not a mouse. The current steam controller shows up as a mouse when I connect it to mobile devices via Bluetooth, so I can’t use it with games that have controller integration build in to the game, since they think I am connecting a Bluetooth mouse. The only reason I don’t use my current steam controller as my main controller is because of the mouse issue.

But instead of like on Bluesky where you subscribe to a list managed by someone else, I’d like a local filter that I can apply and won’t update until I update it.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Can’t pay, won’t pay: impoverished streaming services are driving viewers back to piracyEnglish
16·6 months agoHi, yes its me, I am a won’t pay-er. Canceled Netflix the 2nd time in a year they jacked rates. Canceled Spotify the 2nd time in a year that they jacked rates. Canceling Hulu and D+ at the end of this month. I used to torrent everything before Netflix and when Hulu was free, started paying because it was cheap and easy to see all the shows I wanted. Now streaming is just as bad and cable plans used to be so I am setting up my new seedbox now and its cheaper to pay for the premium seedbox + stream from Jellyfin and I can get back to seeing all my shows that fractured off in to streaming services I didn’t pay for.
Honestly I am impressed at how far seedbox services have come, they are almost totally plug and play, very little configurations needed

Technology@lemmy.world•To survive the AI age, the web needs a new business modelEnglish
11·7 months agoAI bots use existing search engines to get results, it just that the results are now told to you like a conversation instead of a list of links. LLM bots are not search engines and these AI companies are not building search engine bots, they are LLM bots that generate predictive text based on already existing search engines that actually do the indexing. They wouldn’t work at all if it wasn’t for Google and Bing. The referral source may have changed but the SEO strategy is still the same.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•A WYSIWYG editor for personal website?English
4·9 months agoIf you want to host it on your own webserver, Wordpress is best answer. There is no CMS that will really compare to WP for ease of set up and configuration if you are hosting yourself. WP is also portable so if you do decide to move it to a different host you can port the whole site. Should know that WP is a security nightmare if its not kept updated. It requires ACTIVE maintenance, like every day, no longer than every week, it is not “set it and forget it”.
Editing to add- self hosted Drupal and Joomla are also options. I not as familiar with these as I am WP, but they are both portable and easy to set up in a self hosted environment. Also maybe slightly less of a security issue than WP as they are just used less.
If you don’t mind someone else hosting, Wix, Weebly, Duda or Squarespace are very simple systems that can get a site up for you quickly and looking decent. But you cannot move the site to a new host, you are required to stay within their environments.
