Pretty sure this is kind of how lots of memory works in general—very spatially oriented and you can use that to your advantage. Look up ‘memory palace’ for example.

It already is—it’s been much easier for Australians to move freely round Europe for some time. We have friends with dual uk / au passports, and they always use their au docs when travelling in Europe.

Moving desktop to Arch

I’ve been running Arch (vanilla) on a dell laptop for more than a year now, and really happy with it. I also just installed Omarchy on an ancient machine both to try to give it a bit more life and try out a tiling window manager.

Yes it’s more the image viewer I was referring to not the feed view. I worked a bit with the Arctic developer to get it just how I like it, so I guess I’m a bit biased :) But I’ll write it up and see what others think.

I use GitHub a lot so happy to post there. And I’ll post here re ideas. My biggest ‘miss’ from Arctic was the excellent image handling (from a UX perspective). I think they had that just right and would love to see it work that way on Mlem.

Long time Arctic user making the switch to Mlem hopefully. I’ve noticed a few things I really miss from Arctic, and a glitch or two in the last few days of using Mlem exclusively. Just wondering whether it’s preferred to post those here or in GitHub?

I got a large set, and all th bags were paper—including the small ones inside the larger one. It probably is a process of replacing them over time.

Trivial pcb with curved trace

I’m replacing a trivial pcb in a battery pack for a small fan. It’s 6V (4xAA) with a SPST top left and a USB socket top right. But why on earth would the power line on the pcb follow that curved path? There are no other components, just the 2 ends of the battery pack and a plastic housing.

Another example of the scrolling glitch

This one was very repeatable. Scrolling past this post caused the feed to jump up pretty much all the time. I did get it to scroll normally on a few occasions, but not exactly sure what I did...

Missing image in feed

For some reason, this post shows the url text in the main feed, but the image when opened.

Is there anything that can be done about text post flickering on opening?

Hopefully this is known about as it's hard to describe, but in the main feed I see text post previews in a mid-grey colour, and when opening them I see the full text momentarily in that colour (also with no paragraph spacing), and then it seems the style is applied and the text 'flickers'. Mostly just once, so it's not too bad, but sometimes it flickers back and forth causing quite a visual glitch.

I don't know if this is a Lemmy / instance issue, or Arctic, but I noticed that the video in this post opens as a still image instead of a video. Clicking through onto the original post plays fine.

Comment actions from popup don’t update state

If you touch & hold for the popup on a comment, you can upvote, downvote, save, etc. But it doesn't show the changes until you navigate away and back again.

Menu in post view is a bit broken

When opening a post from the main feed and then using the Community menu, the Subscribe entry has the wrong icon, and also doesn’t ‘update’ until you close the post and reopen it (ie it doesn’t show as a toggle, even though it does appear to function as a toggle.

Oh sure. The training data is about 5mb so easily manageable on a relatively modern machine, but not on the kind of thing that was used for ELIZA.

That tldr needs a tldr…

But also you absolutely can learn & build small versions of LLMs on a regular laptop. I did it on my old 2017 Dell XPS, and trained it on the complete works of Shakespeare. It learnt to write almost passable Shakespeare hallucination in a couple of hours. There’s a good tutorial online if you search for it.
