That’s the thing about “eras” — they don’t begin and end every ten years. Early 60s music is much different from late 60s for example. Same with early 1970s compared to the disco era of later 1970s.
The era of post punk/synth/new wave starts emerging around ‘78 with the “dying” of disco. It lasts until around 1986 with its high point at Live Aid. Around ‘86 the sound gets much slicker and the synthesizers change to newer models as well.
Compare Berlin’s “Sex (I’m a) to their later hit “Take My Breath Away” for example. Or Tears For Fears previous albums compared to “Sowing The Seeds Of Love”. Both technically “80s” but pre and post live aid are really different eras.
