This is what Žižek called the “unknown known” in reference to Donald Rumsfeld’s famous speech. That America had, all along, and knew that it had, all along, the capacity for evil and torture, but chose not to confront it or admit it prior to the war.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Hi StarTrek.website, I'm Karim Diané aka Jay-Den Kraag from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, AMA! (Responding to questions Thursday @4pm!)English
311·6 days agoThank you for taking the time to answer our questions!
First growing up, were you a fan of Star Trek? Second, now that you’re part of it, what has it been like to join such a large and long-lasting franchise?
Omelas was a utopia. All we need is to sacrifice one so the rest of us can live in bliss.
The execution currently being wrongfully attributed to Luigi Mangione changed my view—as has the glorious 10th of September, when Charlie Kirk got Charlie Kirk’d.
I realized that, empirically, I am pro-death penalty in some cases.
Maybe another way to put it: do you believe in self defense? Maybe not “castle doctrine” or “stand your ground” but what about cases of war? If killing Nazis and Imperial Japanese soldiers in a war of defense (WWII) is okay, what about self-defense against the billionaires during a class war? It’s no accident the Epstein associates are all “elites.” This is part of the class war and their exercise of power over us.

Movies@lemmy.world•[solved] What is this movie: teen heroin dealerEnglish
2·14 days agoI checked that list and I don’t see it. Wikipedia lists are a good starting point, but it may not have a page. Especially since, I have a sinking feeling about the fact that it may have been a made TV movie which tend to be less well-documented.

1·14 days agoNo, but I’ll add that to my watchlist!
I should have specifiednin the post but it was ca. 1990, plus or minus a few years.
Isn’t this sort of the same idea as a spoonful of sugar and hiccups?

Memes@sopuli.xyz•Probably helps that I'm happy to listen to whatever genre
1·20 days agoThanks! I’ll check them out; I know I was speaking in a broad generalization. For contemporary country, I’m a fan of Aida Victoria, to name one. It’s just, as OP said, those songs and musicians who produce “Republicunt siren songs.”

122·20 days agoActual, classic country is really good. It’s the modern stuff that’s all about loving Bush’s wars, drinking shitting beer, and hating gay people that’s the problem.
Doc Watson, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robbins are all worth checking out, to name a few.

11·21 days agoI mean, the TLD doesn’t necessarily mean anything; do you exclusively post about Mali over at .ml? You going to get sour about the other people posting about UK/EU green politics?

Global News@lemmy.zip•Malaysian Cabinet agrees to PM’s 10-year, 2-term limit, says law ministerEnglish
2·24 days agoInteresting. Highly unusual to see a term limit for a PM when by design parliamentary systems allow you to keep power as long as you have support.
Started life as a peasant, cucked a king, and helped (albeit unintentionally) weaken a monarchy in a way that led to revolution. Truly was doing the lord’s work.

World News@lemmy.world•Europe condemns Trump’s ‘new colonialism’ as Greenland crisis growsEnglish
1·1 month agoHuh, TIL! That does raise some interesting questions about discovery vs continuous settlement. Only other example of terra nullius I can think of is the Falklands-Malvinas dispute which I feel raises similar debates.

World News@lemmy.world•Europe condemns Trump’s ‘new colonialism’ as Greenland crisis growsEnglish
11·1 month agoSaying nothing about the old colonialism with Denmark owning indigenous land such as Greenland.
I don’t know enough about Greenland’s desire for independence, and I assume it’s messy the same way the question of Puerto Rico’s future is, but there’s a lot of injustice that Trump’s expansionism is just the most recent example of.
