  • When you think about it that way it’s no surprise they worship the Orange Pedo as the Second Coming of Christ. You’ve been Living A Wicked Life and have Gone Down The Path Of Sin, and so you deserve to be smited by the divine! But the divine never answered his prayers; you and all those other icky upstart ‘sinful people’ kept having a nice job and everything that he felt should be taken from you.

And then Trump comes along and grants his prayers with deportations and shootings and everything else he thinks you deserve. Is it any wonder he’s willing to suffer himself, as long as you ‘get what’s coming to you’?

  • That’s because you missed rhizomes, not roots. And if you keep cutting the remnants down after you get the main body of the plant out they’ll starve and die eventually, it just takes a few years.

Speaking as someone who has worked with bamboo for a living for over a decade, an ounce of maintenance is definitely worth a pound of cure. Setting up a proper root-pruning system and cutting the young rhizomes twice a year before they have a chance to spread is much easier than chasing it down after the fact.

Now, tropical timber clumping bamboo… those are tough to deal with once they’re mature. They’re like a boulder that grows lol.

  • It would probably need a fair bit of water, too, unless you’re in a more humid climate with summer rains. It is a grass after all.

Unless you planted a tropical clumper, the concrete wouldn’t take damage. A runner would probably pass under it and show up on the other side eventually though. You can stop that by cutting the rhizomes back in summer and fall (think of it like edging a lawn), but it sounds like that space might be too narrow to set that sort of system up well.

  • Actually it spreads very predictably (in either circles or a collection of straight lines) and if you want to get rid of it, just cut it to the ground and stumpgrind out the rhizomes, which are the only part that can spread the plant (and for most species are found in the top 12 inches of soil). If someone tells you that you need to get out every tiny root, they’re bullshitting you.

  • Tribalism. As resources diminish, we have an instinctive need to defend what we need to keep ourselves and our ‘tribe’ supplied. Driving out ‘others’ means more for ‘us’.

It’s just that some people have a smaller mental group of ‘us’ than others. You see all people in America as ‘us’. They do not. (Unless it’s an ‘other’ they personally know; then they get included in their mental ‘us’ as ‘one of the good ones’.)

Of course there’s also the fact that much of the scarcity is artificially imposed by the uber-rich to get people into this easily exploitable mindset but that’s a separate discussion.

  • Their thinking goes something like this:

There are only two kinds of people: Bad People and Good People.

Good people can’t do bad things, only good things (so if they do a ‘bad thing’ it was obviously just an innocent mistake because they’re Good People).

Bad People can never do good things, only bad things (so if they do a ‘good thing’ it was obviously just to further some sinister agenda).

It’s nearly impossible for a Bad Person to become a Good Person, because Bad is something you are, not something you do. It’s basically genetic that they’ll always feel the urge to do Bad. Only a Higher Power like God has the power to ‘save’ a Bad Person, they can never become Good on their own.

    I am a Good Person.

Since I am a Good Person, I can only do good. And I only interact with Good People, and support Good People in politics/whatever because interacting with and supporting Bad People is bad, and I don’t do bad things.

Those people I hang out with said that group over there is Bad. Since they’re Good People (because I interact with them) what they say must be true.

The problem with Epstein is he short-circuits this exceptionalism-tribalism sort of thinking, for two reasons.

First, because he hung out with what they consider ‘Good People’ (which they define as rich white males generally, and people they’ve supported in the past—remember, they only support Good People, because they’re not Bad). But Epstein was so vile, his acts so vile, and the ‘Good People’ so happy to participate, that their brains can’t square the circle of Good Person knowingly and enthusiastically and repeatedly doing Bad Things.

And second, because the vile things he did have been harped on by all the ‘Good People’ they know as being Evil and Vile since way, way before any of this Epstein stuff was even hinted at, so they have a harder time just sweeping it under the mental rug with a ‘they didn’t know!’ or ‘they didn’t mean it!’
