I have been using Arch daily for 13+ years and I still don’t have a proper grasp on audio and Bluetooth…
Used raw ALSA, JACK, PulseAudio, and now Pipewire. I had major issues with all of them except ALSA.
I managed to disable devices like my webcam mic and PS5 mic, and even added a noise reduction filter to my real mic that shows up as it’s own device, but…
Only because the Arch wiki told me specifically how to do those things. Audio just luckily seems to work fine for the most part, currently. I used qpwgraph to play with wireplumber and it’s obviously very powerful, but I have no idea how it works :D
Bluetooth is a different story, it seems to work differently on every single device I’ve worked on…

1·1 day agoIt does have quite a few upsides as well. Identity theft is harder than ever, everything requires 2FA, there is a lot less bureaucracy and paperwork, and almost everything just works.
Everything is digital, cash is only for drugs and old people. If I travel to the other end of Europe, it feels like the stone ages lol
I wonder if the “pirate”/modded servers work on Linux?

35·13 days agoYes, and the Quake 2 engine is one of the greatest software creations of its generation.
The Gamebryo/Creation engine is hot garbage in comparison.

6·16 days agoVentrilo has innate delay and is proprietary.
Mumble is open source and has lowest latency of all the apps.

Technology@lemmy.world•Chatbots Make Terrible Doctors, New Study FindsEnglish
43·24 days agoJust sharing my personal experience with this:
I used Gemini multiple times and it worked great. I have some weird symptoms that I described to Gemini, and it came up with a few possibilities, most likely being “Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome”.
My doctor had never heard of it, and only through showing them the articles Gemini linked as sources, would my doctor even consider allowing a CT scan.
Turns out Gemini was right.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Question: Is there a Self Hosted Discord like app?English
3·24 days agoVentrilo was awful, having huge delay. Also no persistent chat.
TeamSpeak is proprietary and required a license for more than 8 users iirc. Chat might have been persistent?
Mumble was/is king in terms of voice chat. Open source, fully featured, strong certificate based security, best latency. It’s used as backend in many big games, too. No persistent chat, though.
We used IRC for chat and Mumble for voice like 10 years ago when I played Eve Online. Works great!

4·1 month agoYou can be dangerous in traffic regardless of your vehicle… A bicycle can easily reach those speeds downhill, but you still apply the brakes because going 2x speed of everyone else is hazardous, no?
I don’t ride irresponsibly, and I’m not about spend 600€ to replace the motor when I can just limit it and drive responsibly. It’s up to the individual whether they wanna be a douchebag or not.

76·1 month agoI pay for premium in a group of 6. We pay like 6€ each and get YouTube Music on top.
People are too used to free stuff. The amount of bandwidth YouTube requires is absolutely mindboggingly huge and can’t possibly be profitable.

214·1 month agoAlso motors are limited to 250W which seriously limits the danger.
Mine is 750W still (from before laws were made, now illegal) and still can’t accelerate fast enough to be dangerous, but without my limiter the top speed is like 45 km/h.
