Italy plans to participate in US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace as an observer country, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday during a visit to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
The Italian leader had previously said Italy could not become a member of the body for constitutional reasons.
Meloni, who is considered to have good relations with Trump, said Washington has now invited Italy to join as an observer country, which she described as “a good solution.”
Given all the work that needs to be done to stabilize the situation in the Middle East, an Italian and European presence is important, she emphasized.
Trump officially launched the Board of Peace last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Originally conceived to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the body’s ambitions are now unclear, with Trump suggesting it could also be used to address conflicts and crises worldwide.
Many European countries see the body as an attempt to undermine the United Nations and have refused to join, with Bulgaria and Hungary the only EU countries among the body’s 26 members so far.
Italy just can’t help it. Playing second fiddle in a stupid fascist concerto is in it‘s nature I guess.
I’m really not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand Trumps board of peace looks like an platform for evil villains in charge, on the other hand I’m really not sure if the democratic countries have enough weight ignore it and just stick to the good old UN.
The world does not have to react to each and every disrupting bullshit idea Trump and the people behind him come up with. Giving up well established organizational structures for Trump’s private world organization is not a win at all
If the whole world reacted by ignoring this plan that would have been great, but there are loads of countries that signed up to either get on or stay on Trumps good side. This is makes ignoring it have consequences. We can choose to live with those consequences, but this is no longer just an idea he once came up with we all forgot about unfortunately.
The more countries that join it, the more international law breaks down by diverting resources from the UN.
