Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Wireless VR streaming levels up on Linux with the latest WiVRn releaseEnglish
1·1 day agoJust make sure you use XRizer instead of OpenComposite for OpenVR compatibility as it’s much more advanced at this point. You can also use OpenComposite as a secondary if a particular game doesn’t work with XRizer.
For clarity, OpenVR is the historical standard for VR which is still used by some modern games, although more are supporting OpenXR, which WiVRN handles directly.
See also this compatibility list and the Linux VR Adventures wiki.

Opensource@programming.dev•What's the point of switching to Discord alternatives, if they're going to be subject to the same age verification laws?
8·2 days agoIt’s not just they are doing age verification, but the method they are using to implement it. ID collection is not privacy respecting, and further to that, they’ve already had a major data leak, including said IDs. For the facial scan method, they claim that it will be on-device only but given that it’s closed source software, they could change this at any time.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why is self-hosted voice chat so hard?English
17·4 days agoNot FOSS or open source in any sense. You could still say it’s self-hosted, but I suspect most people self-hosting care about this.

2·5 days agoreg.bom.gov.au has existed for a few years at least and always had HTTPS as far as I can remember. The original HTTP site was just retired altogether from what I can tell.

4·5 days agoIt’s both, although the former more than the latter. Also, part of the hoarding is likely happening precisely because of the uncertainty of the tariff policies.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What desktop operating system would you recommend to the average user?
62·6 days agoSteamOS is great but there are too many games that require Windows.
It’s mainly multiplayer games with anti-cheat malware. If they prefer single player games, they’ll be fine.

News@lemmy.world•Moderna says FDA refuses its application for new mRNA flu vaccine
9·6 days agoYep, and you’d think the conspiracy theorists would see that a cheap or free vaccine is exactly counter to all of their theories about people being kept sick so they can pay for ongoing prescriptions.

Android@lemdro.id•Fairphone 6 review: cheaper, repairable and longer-lasting AndroidEnglish
1·8 days agoIf you remember the early Fairphone models they were truly underspecced, so this is reasonable by comparison. And with respect to LineageOS, my experience is that only popular phones get long term support and it’s a bit of a crapshoot. And this is only going to get worse as more and more manufacturers disable bootloader unlocking, or make it incredibly obnoxious to do so (see Xiaomi).
Getting a phone that isn’t a Pixel and is going to have long term support (including non-Android variants) is the main motivation here as I see it. And I’d personally be willing to have slightly weaker specs for that, although the price outside of Europe will push it away from “worth it” I suspect.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux 7.0 Kernel Confirmed by Linus Torvalds, Expected in Mid-April 2026
55·8 days agoThe kernel doesn’t use semantic versioning, so it’s just an arbitrary rename from 6.20 to 7.0. We will know the changes when 6.20 / 7.0 is in the -rc phase, which should be soon as 6.19 was just released.

politics @lemmy.world•'Take the vaccine, please,' a top US health official says in an appeal as measles cases rise
17·8 days agoThe head of HHS, RFK Jr, famously killed a bunch of people in Samoa by lobbying against the measles vaccine. And Oz himself has anti-vaccine stances toward a number of other vaccines. Seems like consistent messaging may be helpful here.

I’m not sure if there’s reliable ways to detect it automatically, but seeing if they have any sort of presence outside of where you are purchasing it would be a start. I’d normally say look on MusicBrainz but even if the bundle above is legit, it’s not the sort of music that would end up on there I suspect as the website owner appears to be the creator and there’s no obvious artist attached to it.
Anyway, that bundle seems suspect to me.
