Privacy@programming.dev•"i am shocked at how many people don't have an actively hostile relationship with advertising"English
10·6 days agoBill Hicks (video):
By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. […]
There’s no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan’s little helpers, OK, kill yourself.
Seriously, you are the ruiner of all things good. […]
No this is not a joke. You’re “There’s going to be a joke coming.” There’s no fucking joke coming. You are Satan’s spawn filling the world with bile and garbage. You are fucked and you are fucking us, kill yourself. It’s the only way to save your fucking soul. Kill yourself […]
I know all the marketing people are going, “He’s doing a joke” There’s no joke here whatsoever. Suck a tail-pipe, fucking hang yourself, borrow a gun from a Yank friend – I don’t care how you do it. Rid the world of your evil fucking machinations. […]
I know what all the marketing people are thinking right now too: “Oh, you know what Bill’s doing? He’s going for that anti-marketing dollar. That’s a good market. He’s very smart.”
Oh man, I am not doing that, you fucking, evil scumbags! […]
Quotes from Jesus according to the gospels:
“If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” Matthew 5:39
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,” Luke 6:27

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•DuckDuckGo Pushes Back on Forced AI, Asks Users If AI Should Be OptionalEnglish
10·28 days agoYip, allowing that domain to set cookies correctly showed “NO AI Thanks for voting — You’d rather skip AI. With DuckDuckGo, you can, because it’s optional.” after voting.
That’s next-level stupid. Do the people at DDG know that cookies can be deleted, or blocked? Was this site made using AI?

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•DuckDuckGo Pushes Back on Forced AI, Asks Users If AI Should Be OptionalEnglish
4·28 days agoI clicked “NO AI”, and the result page showed “YES AI Thanks for voting — You’re into AI. With DuckDuckGo, you can use it privately.”
Is it because I have cookies off by default, and haven’t whitelisted this site for cookies?
Is it because I have NoScript? I had to allow voteyesornoai.com temporarily in order to see anything other than an orange page.

3·1 month agoIsn’t it better to put “q=%s” in Advanced, POST; instead of GETting it by having “?q=%s” in the URL?
Doing the same thing slower (because you’re explaining what you’re doing) sometimes prevents the problem from happening.
Things that aren’t working for a user sometimes work for me because I wait a bit longer between steps, e.g. waiting for the services/background-programs to finish loading instead of immediately clicking something on the desktop/panel 5 times the moment it shows up.
Abolish ICE entirely?

I’m not sure what N is - there’s an number at the top of the page but that may span 8 years.

6·2 months agoAnyone know why LibreWolf isn’t in the default Debian repositories? I trust Debian - I’m not going to add a repository to get LibreWolf.
Until it’s available from a default Debian repo, I’ll keep going thru my list of all the garbage I have to go switch off in Settings and about:config every time I install Firefox for someone.
Between 2019 and 2023, Waterfox was owned by advertising company System1.
So be careful of Waterfox if you agree more with Bill Hicks when it comes to advertising.

Linux@programming.dev•Trying to learn Linux, coming from windowsEnglish
8·3 months agoYou can instead try a distro that just works on most hardware, like Linux Mint or other easy-to-use distros suggested in this thread. That way you can slowly learn how to use Linux if you want, while using Linux, so you can later use a more finicky distro more suited to what you want.
For years I used Ubuntu, but when GNOME 3 came out I changed to Xubuntu, and then when Snap came out I changed to Mint Xfce. I’ve used several 2nd-hand desktops and laptops over the decades, so brand-new hardware might be more problem-prone.
I started off trying Slackware, SUSE, and Mandrake; but struggled too much with them so I stayed with Windows. Ubuntu just worked for me, so it allowed me to easily ditch Windows. Years later, I had update problems when I tested MX Linux and Debian, but instead of trying to fix it, I personally found it easier to just look for a distro better suited to the way I want to use my computer.
