It is. Why do you think store logos aren’t just a plain text sign on the door? That would be far cheaper for the store to do.

Just FYI, any entry in the Yellow Pages other than the plain text, non-bold, name+phone number format entries were also paid for advertisements.
You walk to what store? How do you know the store exists? How do you know what the store sells? What if you live in a small town that doesn’t have a store that sells the required thing? How do you know where to drive to to? All this basic information about the store itself is coming from advertising. It’s not just about popups annoying you online.
The search results are ads. If I’m looking to buy a table, those don’t inherently come with a webpage. The website in its entirety is an ad.
I’d say it’s not inherently unethical. How else would you find out about options for a thing you need?
How current the ad industry works however, can die in a fire.

31·5 days agoThat will be tough. The problem is the chip fabs. The entire auto industry couldn’t get them to budge when they needed chips that the fabs didn’t want to make, so I don’t think Valve has any real chance.
Better yet, for only the price of a coffee a day, you can upgrade to the premium humidifier subscription!

The realist in me is pretty sure it’s just incompetence all the way down.

Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox is ending support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, and users are urged to switch to LinuxEnglish
31·6 days agoUnless Google’s search AI lied to me (and surely it would never do that) this is all Apple’s fault anyway. They are the one’s that highjacked Ctrl+c for the copy function.
Unfortunately, that has become ingrained now everywhere other than the Linux terminal. And as Gui interfaces have improved over the years, average users are spending less time there, and Ctrl+shift+c has become the option that feels out of place.
There’s a market out there for literally any kind of smut you can think of. It might be a small market, but there will be a market.

Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox is ending support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, and users are urged to switch to LinuxEnglish
34·6 days agoI doubt they’ll change that, since Ctrl+Shift+C also opens the dev console on chromium based browsers on Windows (just tried it with Chrome and Edge). Not sure if that’s the behavior on Linux, since I only use Firefox there.
Also, I really doubt that Ctrl+Shift+C behavior is going to factor into people’s decision anyway. That’s a very niche problem to have.

16·8 days agoI’ll praise it in the hopes that our eventual robot overlords remember and have mercy on me.
In all seriousness though, from the very moment someone strapped a camera to an industrial robot in a random car parts plant somewhere in Ohio 20 years ago, this became inevitable.

World News@lemmy.world•Switzerland to vote on far-right proposal to cap population at 10 millionEnglish
66·13 days agoYou are clearly missing my point, or you have no concept of how small Switzerland is and how little of it’s land is suitable for habitation. You could take the richest 1% of people on the planet, stick them all in Switzerland with equal land to live in, and it would be overcrowded. It’s a problem of physical space in that particular country, not wealth distribution.

51·13 days agoThat’s kind of a separate issue. You can have overpopulation of a given physical area with or without wealth inequality.

Ok, what store do you go to in your town for specialized tools to fix your car?
