Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•If you ditched your car, could you afford to leave the suburbs for a great urban neighborhood?English
2·20 days agoThe car isnused formximmuting to work daily, so absolutely less expensive than cabs
Yeah but lets face it, a supermarket rotisserie chicken is generally cheaper and better than a chicken roasted at home. I dont understand the economic of it, but its true. I have up roasting chicken at home because its just never as succulent

Yeha if you were hardly using it then why have the extra expense? In my family its used daily (mostly for work commute to a poorly connected by PT workplace). More than worth it for the conveniance and lifestyle it enables

4·20 days agoIf you dont have a car, you just go more often getting smaller amounts of stuff. Or you bring a cart. Grocery stores are more freqent, but smaller.

13·20 days ago1000 a month for owning and operating a car seems like a lot. Maybe i am out of touch because we own our car outright, but its not nearly that expensive for us. Even with a parking spot rental.
I live in an awesome urban neighborhood, and still wouldnt want to be without the car. I dont use it when it doesnt make sense, but ive lived both with and without, and with is worlds better. Grocery shopping (especially at places like Costco) is much easier. Errands that would be an all day affair without the car become a few hours affair. Friends and family across the city are much easier to see. Things like that.
Dont get me wrong, i love a walkable neighborhood with a walkable downtown. Its why i dont live in a suburb abomination. When it makes more sense to use PT I use it. But life is better with the car overall. Its not a zero sun game. We can have both. And bike lanes. And pedestiran plazas. Etc.

Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•Presidents are selected, not elected - FDR
1·25 days agoThe masses are kind of dumb. Since she ran against trump the first time, they might be inclined to vote for her just to paycologically undo their first vote.

3·25 days agoThe reason republicnas in 2016 were able to get trump is partly because the primary field was so saturated with milquetost candidates. The party apparatus was kind of behind Jeb Bush, but Jeb cluld not stand up against the abuse Trump threw at hime and the others. This was the good times, before trump actually won, but was totally abusing these generic polititians. Its really where the cult around him started.
For the dems though, it really was just Bernie vs Hillary. The party machine coalesced around her years before the primaries even began, and despite what we think about her she was more capable than Jeb Bush. Bernie dis not undress her like Trump did to Jeb, but rank and file Dem voters were different at that time. Still fear driven. Still full of “its time for a woman!” Energy. Not that there is anything wrong with a female president, but that identity was about as deep as it got for some people.
In many ways, the dem party rank and file is more united now than it was in 2016. We couldnt have rammed Bernie through (believe me we tried) because there were enough people who truely wanted Hillary, or were too afraid to “risk it” on Bernie.
Its beautiful

228·1 month agoThere are two kinds if people in this space. This first kind that want better designed towns in general who reject the carcentric designs of the 50s and 60s that we are stuck with. The second kind are bike supremicists who wont be happy until every roadway is bike only. They couldnt give a rats ass about peedtrians, they just want to be the biggest thing in the road.
“Things are fucked and reddit is bad, but i like things”. Thats what that sounds like.
They literally have ads for the modern day american gestapo, but your willingness to resist against it is limited by your desire to read… Fan theories…

Any suggestions? This is me digging around!
