Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•On new installations, Android rebinds the power button to open up Google AssistantEnglish
1·4 months agoThank you, I will definitely check those out.
It also seems I can root my phone, but I’d rather not go that route until absolutely necessary (e.g. some future update that breaks side loading).

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•On new installations, Android rebinds the power button to open up Google AssistantEnglish
5·4 months agoI turn off my phone every night, so I changed that back as soon as I found out.
They also messed with the navigation bar… Before, instead of having three buttons, you could have it display three lines at the bottom that you used by swiping upward. They did away with that, so now your only options are 1) the three regular buttons that are too easy to accidentally press and take up too much screen real estate, or 2) one line that is harder to use combined with a back functionality enabled by swiping from the left ir right sides of the screen. It’s not only slower to use than the three lines, but it also results in accidentally going back when trying to scroll horizontally.
They could have left an option to keep the three lines, but no, they love reminding us we don’t really own the devices we pay for >:|

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•A third of Americans believe Trump’s presidency is part of God’s planEnglish
3·4 months agoIdk, but in this instance, we have Paul the Apostle to thank for Christians’ submission to authority, no matter how vile it is:
Romans 13 1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
more
2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

World News@lemmy.world•UN considers bigger security force as gangs extend grip on HaitiEnglish
2·6 months agoHmm, I just tested with Firefox on Android (w/ uBlock Origin installed) and saw no such thing. Maybe you hit an invisible limit?
Sucks that 12ft.io was taken down; it was easy to prepend it to any address. (I was even using it as a proxy as an fu to news and government sites I didn’t like.) At least archive.is/ph still works.

World News@lemmy.world•Australia worried by Trump threat to raise U.S. pharma tariffs to 250%English
4·7 months agoDefinitely. It would have to be curated similarly to Wikipedia, with discussions, disclaimers and ample references. Also, it would need to be stressed that alternative medicines only be used as a last resort.

5·7 months agoWe need a fallback plan for when all else fails, since we obviously can’t trust politicians and Big Pharma with our health. Wasn’t there an open source project aimed at making the knowledge of how to synthesize drugs available to all? We need to build on that, and also a searchable database of naturally occurring compounds and their pharmacological effects. I want to be able to search a list drugs that might have similar effects to the ones I’m taking, just in case I don’t get my Rxs refilled for whatever reason.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•What are some old freeware PC games you've kept playing over the years?English
2·11 months agoHeck, I still pirate it even though I bought it. (I didn’t want the hassle of migrating my account after the Microsoft buyout.) PollyMC ftw!

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•What are some old freeware PC games you've kept playing over the years?English
4·11 months agoClonk! It’s a 2D mining/strategy/base-building hybrid that was apparently more popular in Germany than other places. I actually paid to play it way back in '05, but it has since become freeware. It’s got a particle sim (similar to Noita, but not as extensive) that plays into the scenarios well.
I didn’t expect it to work, but I hoped it would. But then again, even if it did go through, it would be business as usual with Israel mistreating Palestinians the same way they have been for decades.

News@lemmy.world•FDA moves to cut nicotine from cigarettes, in plan first floated under Trump
2·1 year agoThe FDA says the proposed rule will apply to traditional cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco, cigars and pipe tobacco.
Argh! I’ve been smoking pipe tobacco this whole time to save money and avoid additives. Why not force companies to stop adding dangerous and unnecessary chemicals to their products? And if they care about people’s health and the burden on the healthcare industry so much, why not try actually fixing the broken healthcare/insurance system?
I may have to try growing my own tobacco.
Looks great! Are you rendering with EEVEE Next?
Regarding the low-res textures: they don’t look too bad, but you could always blur the final image a bit and add a VHS filter like others do with Backrooms content. (But then all the other details would be obscured somewhat.)
Nice shot! Looks similar to the Riverside (CA) area.

News@lemmy.world•Harris puts housing at center of economic pitch to US voters
1·1 year agoUnfortunately you’re correct. Even if not everyone is funneled into the prison system, their belongings get taken away and/destroyed. Some even lose beloved pets. I imagine it’s extremely demoralizing having your life broken down to zero and having to rebuild again and again.

I’m guessing you’re referencing the Hamas Charter. It has since been updated:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Hamas_charter
They haven’t fully repudiated the old charter, though, so there’s that. But I can’t fault them for trying to push back against the “Zionist project.” Anyone would fight for their right to continue living on their ancestral lands, if threatened.
