1·5 days agoI did well to put together a new computer in 2023. One of these days I’ll be throwing the 16 core of this generation or the next if it’s still AM5 into this. Once this is out I’ll be excitedly reading Zen 7 rumors if it’ll be new socket or if DDR6 and AI had thrown a wrench in new socket plans

31·5 days agoWould be great for me. Right now I wouldn’t even average one day a year of 93 miles but once a week I do about 40 miles and once a week about 60 miles. I’d do more weekend trips with this and my cars almost 15 years old now so this would be up my alley in the future

Technology@lemmy.world•Acer and Asus ordered to halt PC sales in Germany after Nokia wins HEVC patent rulingEnglish
12·5 days agoI like the news not because I think Asus and Acer should be paying more royalties to the whichever ghoul in the patent web there is but because every-time something like this happens it’s another hit against support for hevc and its nearly 6 year old successor that’s gotten little to no relevant adoption in mobile or desktop hardware. AV2 will publish its final standard 6 years after VVC and pretty much not be behind at all because of how crappy the patent situation is for hevc and vvc

7·6 days agoThis is why I buy games almost exclusively on PC. Run your games on any device that people get it working on. First for me it was all Windows. Then same library on Linux. Same library in streaming services. Same library on Android phones. Soon same library on ARM VR Linux headsets. Same library on RISC-V devices. Someday I’ll be playing my Steam library on a toaster with a display on it

Hardware@lemmy.world•Sony considering PlayStation 6 delay to 2029, while Nintendo could hike Switch 2 price, according to report — memory and storage chip shortage now impacting products outside of RAM, storage, and GPUsEnglish
4·7 days agoMore time to figure out how to market it or work on making sure there’s a multi-major video game lineup for each of the first like 3 years. Or commit to a major delay into the early 2030s for a bigger architecture upgrade like RDNA6/UDNA2 because I don’t think 9070xt rasterization performance with better ray tracing and AI upscaling is going to blow minds compared to PS5 games. Well, there’s barely anything out that can’t be played on a PS4 anyways. The PS6 definitely isn’t getting much of any 3rd party games that skip the PS5 let alone the Switch 2 and Steam Deck
Nice. It’s been ao long since the last game

2·8 days agoGamehub, GameNative, Winlator
Gamehub is the most streamlined. As long as you have a recent as of the last like 3 years flagship snapdragon phone, you can emulate PC games pretty well. No root. Uses FEX, WINE, DXVK, etc. Pretty much the same software used for playing windows games on desktop linux

51·10 days agoAt least on Android emulating your Steam library has become pretty good. A couple more years at this rate and any phone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or better processor and you’re good to play most games that would run on a Switch and more anyways
Switch emulation on PC is already great anyways. Getting there on Android. Sucks that progress has slowed down because of Nintendo takedowns

Games@lemmy.world•Blizzard reportedly partnering with Arc Raiders owner Nexon to revive StarCraft as a shooterEnglish
2·14 days agoPeople, myself included disliked the star crossed lover turn 2 went with following Brood War. Sharp shift from Raynor pledging to kill Karrigan to then being a depressed drunk wanting to save her. That added to the tone being way lighter. Protoss became maybe too high elfy
Terrans, I feel like they flanderized around a basic cowboy western aesthetic rather than anything the confederacy or UED were like in Brood War. A lot more competitive politics for the Terrans in the first game. A bit off that the UED didn’t return.
Zerg became a lot less interesting in my opinion. Kerrigan was redeemed. No overmind or cerebrate intrigue. I think many had way higher expectations for a hybrid/xel’naga faction
I remember a lot of complaints about the first 2 games story being long treks to make kerrigan not Zerg and then Zerg again. I don’t mind the end or what the Xel Naga ended up being, just the journey not having the weight of the first game. A lack of anger. Faction politics didn’t match up the anger of the first game. Felt more high fantasy to me than sci-fi

8·15 days agoQuestion will be if there’s going to be a single player component. Back then StarCraft had a beloved universe and characters. Post StarCraft 2 - the universe and those beloved characters aren’t so beloved anymore. SC2 and expansions may have been worse than Veilguard for their fanbases in terms of universal disappointment over the stories

Game Deals@lemmy.zip•Steam Deal: Save 86% on Need for Speed™ Unbound (9.79€)English
2·16 days agoThat’s what started me on stopping of purchasing of EA games. It was also made easy by how mediocre EA games have been. Also I tried Unbound on game pass when I had an Xbox. I couldn’t last long. It’s writing is so vanilla for a street racing game. Characters sound like they should be in yoga classes rather than doing anything illegal
Quit Ubisoft because of Uplay. That’s consistently been worse than EA account stuff for like 15 years straight

8·21 days agoSeems a decade too late. Mobile/ChromeOS laptops were solid a decade ago since cheap hardware sucked. Dual core Ultrabooks and far worse entry level with spinning disk storage. Now the worse you can get is like an Intel N100 with a SSD. Solid. MiniPC with an N100 is like $200 now since the price hikes. Don’t let desktop become captured by these overly managed mobile operating systems. Glorified web browsers

I should have bought a couple more Seagate external drives to shuck for my NAS. I knew HDD prices would jump so I bought a couple thanksgiving last year but couldn’t stomach spending more. I should have spent more then
