Inspiration

Our personal experiences and fears as women were our main inspiration for Walk2Night. To overcome the feelings of uneasiness and distress that strike most women upon the thought of walking alone at night or even in the day, we decided to pilot a system where women can be a companion to each other in their daily walking trips.

What it does

Walk2Night provides users with the option to see what’s new in their area, to find a friend to walk with, or to view messages. When users enter our app, they are directed to a login page. If they are new to Walk2Night, they will have to sign up for an account, providing first and last names, email, profile photo, etc. To ensure safety, users are asked to verify their identities by providing a valid ID and an immediate photo of themselves. After successfully being verified, if users choose to see what’s new in their area, they will be able to check their location and view local incoming news. There, users can also look for friends to walk with. When a user wants to walk with someone, they can message them or check their own messages for any requests.

How we built it

We used Python and R to build individual features for Walk2Night; however, as beginner hackers, we were only able to build the final version of our app on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Although we all had some experiences with the backend language Python, it was our first time building a website. Although we were able to learn frontend languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the most challenging part was to connect them with each other.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to be a part of the movement that inspires us to resolve real-life issues. Our highlights from the project were definitely our interactive Figma design, as well as the ideation that we could tackle once we are more experienced in the tools required.

What we learned

During TechNova, we were able to experiment with our skills and expand our knowledge of UI/UX design. We hope to take what we learned to continue solving global issues!

What's next for Walk2Night

In the future, we aim to expand our service to other cities to help women understand how safe an area is before travelling there. Plus, with more time, we hope to develop a cross-platform mobile app using React Native.
