What it does
We proposed a system to collect waste cooking oil from restaurants, cafes and fast-food chains which would be transported to 1 of 3 potential processing plants. These would be situated in Reading, Hampshire and Derbyshire near major existing asphalt production plants. Our design covers how the WCO is treated and converted to binders and blended with asphalt to be used in contructing the roads of the future.
How we built it
Used PowerPoint, Canva and Matlab to produce graphics and visual cues to demonstrate our idea. A poster was designed to highlight the primary steps in the conversion of waste cooking oil to road material.
Challenges we ran into
Exploring various chemical engineering project ideas and weighing up their feasibility, implementability and uniqueness.
What we learned
We learned more about alternative sustainability techniques that can be implemented for a circular economy. We also learned about the detrimental effects of improper disposal of waste cooking oil which improved our awareness of green engineering and renewable materials.
