Inspiration
As students, concepts and words in textbooks and scholarly articles can be quite daunting and unnecessarily complex. That is why we wanted to create Dumbify.
What it does
It takes any complex word or concept and explains it in an easy, digestible way. You are able to choose if you would like to define and simplify a word/concept. There are three levels of explanations. Simple explains the concept in the simplest terms, Child explains as if you are an 8-year-old, and our personal favourite, Monkey, explains it as if you are a monkey.
How we built it
We used HTML/CSS for the front end and JavaScript and OpenAPI for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
We found it challenging to work with the OpenAI API and customize the prompts in accordance to the user input. This was also our first time working with Chrome Extensions, and it was an excellent learning opportunity because there are countless users on Chrome and is therefore accessible and more useful to users around the world.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how functional and practical it turned out to be. We are proud to learn how to implement AI with chrome extensions.
What we learned
We learned how to build chrome extensions and customize OpenAI prompts. We also learned the power of AI and how it can revolutionize our everyday lives in a positive manner.
What's next for Dumbify
We want to allow the user to simply highlight text in order for Dumbify to simplify that word or sentence. We also want to expand the capabilities so that you can upload a PDF or textile, and our software will be able to process the explanation within a fast time.
