Inspiration
As students, we know how difficult it can be to find grants. They are scattered across many different websites and it's very hard to get an overview of which grants are relevant for you.
What it does
Our platform allows students to fill in some short information about themselves. We then intelligently match them against our database of more than 17 000 stipend funds. Finally, we automatically draft applications based on information about the student and information about the grant.
How we built it
We built a full-stack Ruby on Rails application backed by an SQLite database. To create a large database of stipends we both crawled the web and integrated open datasets. To make the dataset searchable we used Gemini to create embeddings to enable semantic search. Finally, we integrated Stripe to enable easy payouts through our platform.
Challenges we ran into
The largest problem that we ran into was unifying all unstructured data about all the stipends in Sweden into a structured format that can easily be queried by our matching engine.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are immensely proud of our platforms ease of use, which we believe can create great value for students from all walks of life in need of funding to continue pursuing their dreams.
What we learned
We learned that it's better to spend more time on planning than on execution, which will make us better builders in the future.
What's next for GrantStream
GrantStream has huge potential for other fields as well. Similar grants exist for companies, but it's just as hard to find and apply for the grants. Similarly, researchers have a huge burden of financially supporting the work and we foresee ourselves as the solution.
