Inspiration

In many environments such as classrooms, meetings, and group discussions, emotional signals like confusion, stress, or disengagement often go unnoticed. This can lead to miscommunication and reduced engagement. We were inspired to explore how design could make these invisible emotional signals visible and help people better understand the emotional atmosphere of an interaction.

What it does

Empathy Lens is a speculative interface that visualizes the emotional atmosphere of a conversation. The system analyzes signals such as engagement patterns and interaction behaviour and translates them into a visual emotional map.

Users can quickly see emotional states such as calm, curiosity, stress, or confusion using simple visual indicators.

One of the key features of the system is Perspective Mode, which allows users to view the interaction from another participant’s emotional perspective.

How we built it

The interface and prototype were designed using Figma. We created a series of interactive screens that simulate emotional signal detection and visualize emotional insights through an intuitive user interface.

The prototype demonstrates how emotional data could be visualized and how users could navigate insights and perspectives during an interaction.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was designing a clear way to represent emotional signals without overwhelming the user. We focused on simple color coded indicators and visual maps to make emotional information easy to understand.

Another challenge was designing Perspective Mode in a way that clearly communicates how another participant might experience the interaction.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned

Through this project we explored how UX design can help improve emotional awareness and communication. We learned how visual design and interaction patterns can translate complex emotional data into intuitive insights.

What's next for Empathy Lens

In the future, Empathy Lens could integrate with real-time behavioral signals, wearable devices, or communication platforms to provide more accurate emotional insights and help people build more empathetic interactions.
