    well, it is merely a question of solidarity.
    Our funding picture https://web.archive.org/web/20230531001836im_/https://freelens.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Jahrestreffen_1995_Steche-1.jpg
    I'm the guy very bottom left and was 16.

    Shortly after France built their union freelens and others too.

    On the other hand - after all my cameras sank into South Pacific, I switched to writing fedi software and this might _not_ be a question of countries alone.

    The solidarity in the tech sector is anywhere much lower than amongst journalists. Maybe this is due to the fact that old white valley people in chairs are not threatened directly by Kalashnikows pointed through the head or sinking boats. The tech sector thinks mostly it is the privileged sector and this is the opposite of, well, solidarity …

    Just btw, this is 7 years old https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/94ubnd/chess_over_activitypub/ but anyway

    However, given that I have, including immers and redaktor, at least 3 apps where I can use the first chess spec.:
    if more than 2 implementations will also support this second chess specification, I will do so too.

    @mat Has a reason, just wrote it to @julian in a DM, just didn't want to post public.

    Not sure if you visited the link. This _was_ the community approval …
    Immers was famous and we had some official Social CG meetings where I linked one where thousands of community people attended (?)
    The W3C Social CG _is_ the Community (?)
    Meanwhile even Public Spaces Incubator uses it which is to my best knowledge the largest upcoming iimplementor by far.
    I mean apart from that it is pretty obvious after the meeting where we talked about "factual" vs "fictional".
    mastodon has nothing to do with this. The majority of projects count in a democracy. We had a demo playing chess between 4 softwares.

    Doing the official AP Conf and becoming elected Policy Lead, I had always asked the community. For 20 years 😞

    Not sure if anyone did read the "Conformance Section" of ActivityPub. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#conformance
    It is section 2 - You have to support "The Entirety"...
    If mastodon does not it is not ActivityPub.

    We implemented this standard and you can create / describe your rooms [Place, `redaktor:fictional`] and the chessboard is just a geohash as described in the geosocial CG so the use is the same, just `redaktor:fictional` too,
    You load the Collection of Chessfigures (pawn1 ...) can name them, they `Travel` over the chessboard ant the `Arrive` describes the `result`.
    As always you can get very detailed with wikidata properties and entities but bare AS Vocabulary is enough.
    In the end you have a Collection for the Travels which is your played game which you can replay or do whatever with.

    But you can still install immers - it is worth a try https://github.com/immers-space

    The reason for its end are the same as for the gup.pe groups and I hope people konw about it …

    Do you know about the backgrounds of the immers project ?
    , "no-one's actually using AP to play chess"
    the reason that we have noa AP chess service _anymore_ is #uspol …

    This all feels very unfair somehow cause I know the backgrounds but anyway …
    While we 2 days ago had a long thread about our use of Chess Games I will link the video from the thread https://digitalcourage.social/@sl007/116023149133783002

    immers with its federated locations and positional audio etc was supernice for playing chess !
    Our use is fairly similar and straightforward like we did the chess Social CG meeting in 2018 and the rc3 (usually 18.000 people physically but here it was virtually cause pandemics) https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/rc3-chaos-communication-congress/1202

    Maybe it would really be fair if people are new to look into the 20 years Social CG history where some volunteers really gave much work 🙂

  • Introducing WebIntents: A universal follow button for the fediverse.
    Sebastian LasseS Sebastian Lasse

    @julian

    Oh yes, off course.
    Let me introduce @paul – the maker

    However, the history here is that it was planned to make it part of AP between AS and the first protocol drafts where a chat with the inventors is documented in the w3c minutes very early. The terms were always called "ActivitHandler" or "ActivityIntent"
    The original idea should be linked in my document which I initially wrote for the Social CG meeting 1 in the year 2023 :

  • It’s really surprising to me that the #fediverse hasn’t agreed on a standardized way to open cross-instance #activitypub objects and instead relies on links that open in the browser.
    Sebastian LasseS Sebastian Lasse

    @benpate
    Off course not, this would be even illegal in the EU.

    [edit] I am super thankful for the FEP!
    It is just that I am (at the same time) super frustrated about the browser makers, acting as gatekeepers in the context of Open Protocols.
    As the elected Policy Lead, I advised the EU about „federating systems“ in the DMA/DSA. Nothing of this is covered by the law currently.

    The idea is super old and dead simple.
    https://developer.mozilla.org/de/docs/Web/API/Navigator/registerProtocolHandler
    The "limited available" and the calculated "bugs" in the support makes me sad.

    As user: If it is my private computer, I want to be able to store the "me" in the browser, that is primarily my fedi handle ot url … … …
    Then it is possible on any webpage to share any ActivityPub item from my account by just a click without revealing my identity directly. This should really be a task of the browser. Mozilla Persona was a nice idea as well until they sent the team to create games which nobody played.

    PS History continued, two years later, in 2019 I sponsored the first offiial ActivityPub Conf https://conf.tube/c/apconf_channel/videos and in the Prague dox museum we had a short session where we said to talk to the browser people again in some years. The 2020 Conf was fully packed and then I was personally overloaded with the EU DMA/DSA consulting (disclaimer; invited expert but all voluntary) …
    But maybe that time would benow - at least in the interest of accessibility …

    @julian

    well, the difference is what I demoed at IWC:
    Apple itself (itms) or zoom https://www.visualcapitalist.com/zoom-boom-biggest-airlines/ can do anything.
    You will not be asked for consent.
    Same with mailto …

    But as shown the consent mechanism is not standardized and when I see the nearly white icon in the white browser bar I wanted to hit the person who made it cause at least 30% will not even realize it …

    @julian

    just some historical context,

    since at least 2010 (16 years ago) registerProtocolHandler is specified and worked for mailto: then for tel: (cause nice for gooles android)

    back in 2015 (11 years ago) we (w3c SocialCG) had talked to all the browser makers about making ActivityPub and webmention trusted protocols.

    In 2016 (T-10 years) I demoed the existing practical problems at Jeremy Keiths indiewebcamp in Brighton see the demo https://www.youtube.com/live/W70wd56i0Bg?si=DJgm9WsGpwzaLdGJ&t=2030 (indiewebcamp demos are written in incredible short time …)

    Anyway - nothing changed at the browser makers except the browser makers switched their positions from company to company. @jaffathecake 🙂

    [edit; well: Mozilla did BrowserId, renamed it to Persona and directly trashed it cause then gaming and AI [where the parts of the teams went to] was more important …
