In a proper social media environment, I could click on #BadBunny and quickly scroll to a video explainer of the halftime show for us dumb English only folks. True decentralization would mean they all interoperate. Not only no separate corporate silos, but #peertube and #mastodon and #lemmy would all mesh better than they do today. Video hosting plus news feed virality plus sorting based on hashtag and reply ranking. No ads or algos. Creators get paid per second what we can afford.#SocialWeb

When you get a lot of followers, most people then want social media to be their soapbox instead of a forum. Just spew their opinions, get praise, boost very little and never have to see criticism. Some want that from day one.#SocialWeb

They boost this account because we created them and it is how we share information with their users. If you look at the Channels, you will likely notice a variety of content across the Social Web.In the past, when others noticed this behaviour, we did unfollow this account across the Channels because we agree - we don't want to inflate metrics or end up on a trending page - but this was a mistake and we reinstated the following.In the future, it is likely we won't need to reach our Channel users in this way (and hopefully trending will better reflect the Social Web as a whole), but until then we will continue with this account as a contributor across all Channels.If you don't want to see the work of our charity, please feel free to defederate from our instances (if your server allows) and/or block this account.

@zotheca I think it's a mistake to focus on "community" with the fediverse, but it's very nice to bring your community to the fedi. Like everyone who listens to a certain podcast being on a server etc.I want everyone on the fedi. That requires a very open norm re interaction. Basically just no abuse.But communities are limited and should have any rules they want. More suited for group tech with more privacy.We're still struggling with balancing social media and social networking imo.

@omz13 the goal is to reduce bias as a society so that we are able to deal with the world as best as possible. bias is inherent but by mixing our different biases together and not giving any of them too much influence, we can do this.

We mistake social media as being about posts instead of boosting other work. We get a culture of quips instead of what it could be, the virality of more in-depth work. Stuff made for the web and thus freed of the limits of TV time or newspaper/magazine word count. Social media could let us decide together that our time should be spent with that, displacing the constraints of old media.But that will never be what the corporate algo favors.
