Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•"We need to talk seriously about general strikes, about breaking quorum, about exploiting parliamentary procedure to ensure that Republican legislation doesn't get through." (Kat Abughazaleh)English
2·1 day agoUkraine giving up it’s nukes was one of the reasons it was invaded. Also, the US promised to defend Ukraine incase it was attacked as part of the negotiations for them giving up their nukes, but that promise was broken.
For more info in the topic, see Ukraine and weapons of mass destruction
Ukraine inherited about 130 UR-100N intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) with six warheads each, 46 RT-23 Molodets ICBMs with ten warheads apiece, as well as 33 heavy bombers, totaling approximately 1,700 nuclear warheads that remained on Ukrainian territory.[2] Thus Ukraine became the third largest nuclear power in the world (possessing 300 more nuclear warheads than Kazakhstan, 6.5 times less than the United States, and ten times less than Russia)[3] and held about one third of the former Soviet nuclear weapons, delivery system, and significant knowledge of its design and production.[4]
…
In 1994, Ukraine agreed to transfer these weapons to Russia for dismantlement and became a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, in exchange for economic compensation and assurances from Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom to respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.[6][7] Almost twenty years later, Russia, one of the parties to the agreement, invaded Ukraine in 2014 and subsequently also from 2022 onwards.

3·1 day agoBut, if they are in an active war. Wouldn’t sending them aid and arms prolong the war? Wouldn’t that be pro-war according to how I understand your argument? Perhaps it might even lead to more deaths then if Russia would just conquer it without the ability for Ukraine to resist invasion.
Pro-war doesn’t mean just preparing for war right? It means a desire for war.
(For the record, I think we should be sending aid and arms to Ukraine. I’m just trying to follow your logic.)

1·1 day agoThe last general strike was only in the state of Minnesota.
I agree that we should question and think critically.
Killing anyone should be emotionally charging.
I’m working on helping some Iranians release videos on the regime killing civilians.
The killing of civilians is wrong, especially when done in a “precision strike”. The US military should be held accountable for this.
These children were killed in a pre-emptive strike before there was a “war”. Even if the school was in the middle of an Iranian military base, the school did not need to get bombed.
Killing children was great until it got all political.

214·3 days agoI’m glad he is dead, I hope the people of Iran can unite and topple the regime themselves and put the government of their own design in place.
I’m getting word that the people celebrating his killing are being shot by Iranian military in the street, not sure how credible it is.

111·3 days agoWar crimes such as striking schools and hospitals is a common Israeli military practice.
Under Obama, the US famously made it so that anyone in a stike zone is automatically an enemy combatant, no matter their age or anything else.
I’d be glad to see Ali Khamenei dead and I hope there is no power vacuum that makes this worse for the civilians in any country. However I can’t trust anything our media says anymore.
Edit: It could have been a black flag by the Iranians, but I would not put it past USA or Israel.

61·3 days agoI don’t blame you. You can’t trust online media and it’s pretty hard to get information out of Iran or about a current war in general.
However, it is being widely reported by international news that this event happened.

82·3 days agoI don’t think anything in this picture is NSFW. It’s incredibly horrible, and a war crime, but most of the US profits from war now so I’d say this is the fruits of our labor.
