Certification Program Overview
Why certification matters
Section titled “Why certification matters”Teams that adopt Optimizely One get the most value when every member — from content editors to platform architects — understands the capabilities available to them and knows how to apply those capabilities to real business problems. Certification gives you a structured way to prove that understanding, earn recognition, and stay current as the platform evolves.
The Optimizely Certification Program is designed around three principles: validate practical skill (not rote memorization), cover every product in the Optimizely One suite, and keep credentials current through lightweight annual renewal.
Program structure at a glance
Section titled “Program structure at a glance”The program is organized along three axes: tiers (depth), roles (perspective), and tracks (product focus).
- 3 Tiers — Foundation, Core, Advanced
- 5 Roles — Practitioner, Strategist, Solutions Architect, Developer, Administrator
- 13 Tracks — one per product area (CMS SaaS, CMS PaaS, Web Experimentation, Feature Experimentation, Configured Commerce, ODP, and more)
- 65 Certifications — the full matrix of tiers, roles, and tracks
Certification tiers
Section titled “Certification tiers”Each tier represents a depth of expertise. You progress through them sequentially within a track.
| Tier | Focus | Exam format | Typical preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Concepts and terminology | 40 scenario-based MCQs, 60 minutes | Self-paced learning path (4-6 hours) |
| Core | Applied skills and configuration | 30 MCQs + 2 code/config tasks + 1 written rationale, 90 minutes | Guided learning path + hands-on lab (12-20 hours) |
| Advanced | Architecture, optimization, edge cases | 20 MCQs + 3 code tasks + 2 written rationales, 120 minutes | Project experience + advanced learning path (30+ hours) |
Exam format details
Section titled “Exam format details”Every exam uses a blend of three question types:
- Scenario-based MCQ — You read a realistic business or technical scenario and select the best answer. Questions test judgment, not recall.
- Code / configuration task — You write or modify code, configuration, or query definitions in a sandboxed environment. Core and Advanced tiers only.
- Written rationale — You explain your reasoning for a design decision in 100-200 words. Core and Advanced tiers only.
Certification matrix
Section titled “Certification matrix”Foundation is a single cross-product exam that every learner takes first. Core and Advanced certifications are product-specific and role-specific.
| Track | Core | Advanced | Mini-cert |
|---|---|---|---|
| CMS SaaS | ✅ | ✅ | |
| CMS PaaS | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Configured Commerce | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Commerce Connect | ✅ | ||
| Web Experimentation | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Feature Experimentation | ✅ | ✅ | |
| CMP | ✅ | ✅ | |
| ODP | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Analytics | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Opal | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Opti ID | ✅ | ✅ | |
| Graph | ✅ | ✅ | |
| OCP | ✅ | ✅ |
Each Core and Advanced exam is further segmented by role — for example, CMS SaaS Core (Developer) and CMS SaaS Core (Practitioner) are separate credentials with different questions.
Certifications are designed for five distinct roles. Each role emphasizes different skills and sees different exam questions, even within the same track and tier.
| Role | Who this is for | Assessment emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Practitioner | End users, marketers, content editors | Day-to-day platform usage, workflow configuration |
| Strategist | Digital strategists, CSMs, consultants | Business outcomes, scenario-based decisions |
| Solutions Architect | Platform architects, pre-sales engineers | Integration patterns, system design |
| Developer | Front-end and back-end engineers | Code implementation, API usage |
| Administrator | IT admins, platform owners | Platform configuration, security, operations |
Meta-credentials
Section titled “Meta-credentials”When you earn multiple certifications, you unlock meta-credentials that recognize breadth and depth of expertise.
| Meta-credential | Requirements | What it signals |
|---|---|---|
| Champion | Core cert in 2+ distinct products (post-Foundation, excl. mini-certs) | Cross-product understanding |
| Master | Core cert in 4+ distinct products | Operates across the majority of the Optimizely portfolio |
| Legend | Master + 3 Advanced certs across 3 distinct products | Elite-level mastery — rare by design |
Partner tiers
Section titled “Partner tiers”Optimizely partners earn organizational tier recognition based on their team’s collective certifications.
| Partner tier | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Silver | 5 Foundation certifications across the team |
| Gold | 10 Core certifications spanning 2 or more products |
| Platinum | Gold requirements + 5 Advanced certifications |
Partner tiers unlock co-marketing opportunities, priority support, and access to pre-release features.
Legacy certification holders
Section titled “Legacy certification holders”If you hold a certification from the previous Optimizely certification program, you may be eligible for the Bridge Program. Bridge-eligible users can skip the Foundation exam and proceed directly to Core certification exams.
- Your Optimizely representative or partner manager can provide a bridge code
- Enter the bridge code when prompted on the exam page — the Foundation prerequisite is waived
- The Core exam itself is unchanged: same questions, same passing threshold, same time limit
- Passing awards a standard Core certification, identical to one earned through the normal path
- Bridge codes are one-time use — once redeemed, subsequent certifications follow the standard path
This program ensures that experienced Optimizely practitioners can quickly validate their expertise in the new framework without repeating foundational material they have already mastered.
Annual renewal
Section titled “Annual renewal”Certifications are valid for one year. Renewal uses a delta-only format: you answer questions that cover only what changed since your last certification or renewal. This keeps credentials current without requiring you to re-prove knowledge you have already demonstrated.
- Renewal exams are 15-20 questions and take approximately 30 minutes.
- If a product area had no significant changes, the renewal exam is shorter.
- Failing a renewal exam does not revoke your certification immediately — you have a 30-day grace period to retake it.
Getting started
Section titled “Getting started”- Choose your role — Start with the role page that matches your job function.
- Pick a track — Select the product area most relevant to your work.
- Begin at Foundation — Every track starts with a Foundation certification. Complete the learning path, then take the exam.
- Progress to Core — After earning Foundation, the Core learning path and exam become available.
- Reach Advanced — Core holders can pursue Advanced certification when they are ready.
