@m: I'm hearing you're the person to ask about stuff with potential landlord implications; any thoughts on what replacing the deadbolt on the back door would entail? I'm looking at the single-cylinder models here: https://securitysnobs.com/Deadbolts/

there was a spare backdoor in the stack of doors

yeah I'm unsure what the goal is with replacing the deadbolt?
and yeah we have a stack of spare doorknobs and deadbolts and doors already

the current one's just fucked mechanically (like, the thumb turn doesn't engage unless pushed into place just right)
though if there are a bunch of spares laying around (potentially of the same model) then maybe just replacing a smaller subset of parts would be sufficient

The door itself is just broken unless we can also replace the glass as well.
you can just replace the entire door. there is a duplicate in the stack of doors

the gist of it is:

  • replacing the full door is easier
  • we have a replacement door in the comms closet
  • we either have to ask the landlord to do it for us (he's been fairly timely) or just do it ourseleves. we have people who probably would. entropy?

Door just needs to be swapped by the hinge. Probably less than a 2 hour job, most of which will be glassmanagement.
Door has 3 basic hinges, prepped to be removed (raised to the height of a pliers).

  1. Remove glass (best with a friend) and line remaining edge with duct tape
  2. Pop off hinges and remove old door
  3. Place and set new door
  4. Dispose of old door

Where to dispose of door?

Allen and I worked to get the door swapped out on Sunday. It is technically functional! The deadbolt appeared misaligned and was omitted; and the bottom hinge needs to be filled with wood glue and dowels before being redrilled for new holes - also omitted

Tues, Kaylee returned to assess remaining repair needs. Staged the deadbolt in place to cover the empty hole and taped a message about it.

Looking at it again, fixing the bottom hinge may make the deadbolt align.

Screws for the hinge and the bolt for the door are in a clear bin on the rack just inside the door of the utility room

Deadbolt is installed, however the door jamb needs to be moved up 1/4" to engage properly. Clearance is +/- 3/16" iirc. Pls double check those measurements before doing things. I don't think doing the hinges first will change anything but you can do that if you want.

My memory fails me as to if I put the two screws in the face plate or left them on the steps for someone to step on.

Dowel rod and wood glue have been left with the clear tub. The general process is to drill out the old hole such that it is a friction fit for the dowel, cut an appropriately sized length of dowel, put a small amount of glue on the end of the dowel, tap it into the hole with a hammer, and after the glue sets it should be functionally solid. This will keep us from blowing out holes that are drilled too close to existing holes.

Note that the style screw we have for the hinges require a pilot hole to be drilled that is the same diameter as the shank, also they are brass so go slow if you use power tools to tighten them

I will be gone visiting my ancestral home the next week.
