Pinned post

๐Ÿ“Œ Another post Iโ€™m going to pin:

If you started following me, Iโ€™d love to know why! Please ping me and say hi, it makes my day :).

Took all weekend, but finally got the desk sorted! I have the 32-bit corner, the current corner, and the 8-bit corner!

The nest of upscaler, KVM, and input selector cables is truly horrifying. But it all works!

Weโ€™re looking at moving into somewhere bigger soon, so we can have a proper โ€œcomputer labโ€. But super happy for this for now :โ€™)

(And 16-bit stuff like an Amiga or Atari 1040ST would be incredible, but also no space right now!)

I'm copying my pinned post from Twitter which reminds me of fun times with lovely people. I'd just left an AsiaBSDCon dinner with everyone in Tokyo:

โ€œWhy donโ€™t we ask Claudeโ€

Why donโ€™t we take the batteries out of all our carbon monoxide detectors so we can get some sleep

I've come to realise that some people just like explaining things, and they might be a bit lonely?

I'll write a blog post about my IC programmer, and I'll get ten emails telling me what an EEPROM is. I mean, thanks! But I very much already knew, as evidenced by the fact I literally wrote about using them.

This happens constantly, with anything I write about.

I don't feel like they're being malicious like regular mansplainers? I suspect they just don't have people to talk about their hobbies with. It still pains me to say that it doesn't make their responses any less tedious though, especially in aggregate, every day.

I dunno, there's a lot going on there. Maybe something worth thinking more about when I'm not about to rush to my next meeting.

Cheesy nice family stuff

I love the family folklore and language that Clara and I have developed over time.

If something is great, I get a message saying "YAY TASTY!" and if I'm stressed or worried I get an "EW STANKY!"

It's awesome. โ™ก

Well this is awesome, cars banned around school at drop off and pick up. More schools should do this. bicyclensw.org.au/sydneys-very

It just this second occurred to me to draw a connection between "Generative AI" and "Liquid Glass" as two technologies which have the effect of making everything appear to be covered in a thin layer of slime

don't worry ms. thatcher, heaven may some day trickle down on ya

So many people have given me their retrocomputer treasures, I've decided to contribute back.

Anyone in want my Japanese NEC APEX VPS 486, for free?

โ€ขย 486DX2, 66 MHz
โ€ขย VESA Local Bus riser
โ€ขย UMC UM82C491 chipset
โ€ขย 16 MiB SIMM
โ€ขย 128 KiB cache memory
โ€ขย 1.6 GB Quantum hard drive
โ€ขย PC DOS J6.30/V (can install English DOS)
โ€ขย Sound Blaster 16 with OPL3

(Includes JUST the NEC, not the monitor or other stuff).

Works great, and I love the Japanese stickers. Alas, it smells a bit musty which sets off my allergies :(. Maybe you could clean it, or maybe doesn't bother you. Please don't reply telling me how to clean it.

I don't have a car, so happy to meet at a northern Sydney train station. If I don't get takers in a week, I'll offer to ship within Australia. Its quite heavy, so outside AU would be expensive.

Feel free to DM me if you're interested.

the only thing faster than the speed of light is how fast questions marked with these disclaimers will turn out to be asked in bad faith

Older people will know them as Olympus cameras.

You never had to provide biometric authentication to use NNTP.

It's amazing how the mood from five great convos with awesome, smart people can be undone by a 5 minute interaction with a jerk.

I wish data centres made it easier to go direct for colocation for personal stuff, but they always want business details and minimum commits.

I know (extremely well) that there are plenty of intermediaries. I also know the financial reason why they don't want to entertain tiny accounts. But still.

Hey Melbourne friendos, there's baseball on again in Laverton this weekend. Anyone interested?

Saturday night and Sunday arvo both seem decent options.

#rayshader adventures, an #rstats tale

I will note that one of the real unanticipated joys I've had from using my #Commodore64 ultimate has been:

- Not being prompted for whether I want to use some sort of Cloud storage, and
- Not being prompted to enable some AI functionality

This is not something we should need to go back to 8-bit computing to achieve.

Does anyone have a favourite stand thing for old ISA, PCI, VLB, and AGP cards? I feel like itโ€™s finally getting a bit silly in here.
