It really depends on the location within the US. Each state really operates like their own country, connected through the federal government, so standards of living, and what constitutes poverty can widely vary. However, the broad trend is: minimal to no labor protections, employer or self-funded health insurance are the only way to begin to afford medical care (dental insurance is a rarer offer), and there are a lot of trade-offs in determining how to survive. There is very much a different reality for people with money compared to how a lot of others are forced to live. The reasons are historic and systemic, and there’s too much to fully unpack in a response to a post. However, it can be simplified to: rampant, virtually unchecked capitalism is used to extract all of the labor and wealth from the general populous. The “American Dream” is propaganda shoved down everyone’s throat to make people think that they, too, can work hard to become wealthy enough to not have to scrape together enough money to survive. Except that it’s all a lie built on generational wealth, servitude, and violence.

Tipped wages originated from business owners refusing to pay freed slaves a fair wage after the US Civil War. The US still openly practices economic slavery. The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution allows slavery as punishment for a crime, which is why prison populations in the US are enormous. Private companies operate prisons here. This country was built and is maintained by slaves. The wealthy segregate themselves so they don’t have to see or think about it, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

My favorite part about geology is the application of fractal theory. So this new model should apply on both the micro and macro scales. I would love to see this daring new model evident in both a thin section and a road cut!

I watched it a few years ago, and yes it drags. The ending is slightly worth it, but it was a challenge to get there.

Rocks and minerals, whether they are refined or not: roads and building materials; ore processed into elemental metals; soils (biologically, chemically, and physically weathered rock); quartz is used for glass (melted and shaped) and timepieces (piezoelectric application of quartz); micas: (windows made of thin leaves, Muscovite), used as reflective additives in road paint and makeup; gypsum is used as fertilizer, sidewalk chalk, plaster, drywall, etc. The list goes on and on, but my point is, geology provides many things in our world that are considered mundane or often overlooked.

I’ve used it to run a modest list of Skyrim mods (100ish), and it worked pretty well (although Requiem was very difficult, and I ended up not being able to fully install it). There is a bit of a learning curve, and the wiki provides a decent introduction. It doesn’t cover every single use case but is enough to get up and running. No virtual file system like MO2. It makes a directory for all installed mod files, then drops those into your game files when the mods are deployed through Limo.

It’s just Mother Earth, Father Sky, and your dear old Uncle Tony

I don’t know. I stopped reading the books partway through Book 4 and stopped watching the show after Season 3ish(?). I just got bored with the premise of the whole story boiling down to political intrigue without a satisfying progression of the characters and plolines I personally enjoyed. I didn’t want to slog through hours and hours of reading to only get a sprinkling of the action I craved on top of the chapters of scheming and plotting. It just got stale for me.

Crapshoot is referencing the dice game of craps, as in, “it’s a roll of the dice”, so the outcome is left to chance. There’s nothing to say the Lord of Light is actually the one responsible for her powers, or that said powers even come from a deity, hence, an outcome of chance.

Short answer: Get an evaluation by an audiologist, if possible.

Long answer: Depending on the personal cause of tinnitus, solutions range from nothing to getting hearing aids with specific software that provides tinnitus relief. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in higher frequencies and have very noticeable tinnitus. The complications from hearing loss with tinnitus can vary, but personally were resulting in increased sensitivity to noise throughout the day, irritability, and diminished ability to communicate (I couldn’t hear what my spouse or kids were saying when there was any kind of background noise present). It led me to never want to go anywhere or do anything outside our home because I couldn’t hear or enjoy anything.

I went to an audiologist, had a bunch of tests, and was prescribed a set of hearing aids. Said hearing aids play soft ocean noises in addition to boosting the frequencies I have diminished hearing in. The ocean noises allow the brain to train itself to treat the tinnitus as a routine background noise instead of a panic inducing “danger” sound. Over time, it has helped in significantly reducing my attention to the tinnitus. It will never go away, and I have to sleep with ocean sounds playing so I don’t go insane.

I read every day at work while I eat my lunch and usually while I get ready for bed at night.

This is a pretty cool finding: river flow driven by water overflowing/breaching impact crater rims rather than driven by tectonics.
