United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Arrest after Churchill statue defaced with graffitiEnglish
1·22 hours agoI completely agree. Like it or not if you want your protests to become a movement you have to appeal to “normal” people. When a normal person sees a statue of a person they consider a hero being vandalised or they see a protest full of people with dreadlocks, green hair, and hippy clothes they’re just going to dismiss it as an alternative culture that they don’t relate to.
If I’m being cynical here it almost makes me believe that some of these people care more about their identity and image than they do about the cause. They’ll go to all the effort of turning up to these things but they can’t even get a haircut and throw on a shirt. I’m going off on a tangent here.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Earbud question: Does anyone actually like to silicone tipped earbuds over the solid plastic ones?
2·3 days agoI like the silicone ones when they fit. I have some round the ear ones for jogging and they’re great. Never budge.

Buy European@feddit.uk•European alternatives to Google Translate? Preferably not LLM.English
4·6 days agoWhy not LLM? When ChatGPT came out I was living a country where I didn’t speak much of the local language. GPT was a game changer, it didn’t just translate the words, it understood the context and it was much more useful.
Is this stuff actually real? I’m in the UK and our office installed an outdoor heated seating area to encourage people to stop sitting at their desks during their breaks purely because they don’t want us to work for the hour.

Dull Men's Club@lemmy.world•I've had this puzzle on my phone for years. Every few months I'd glance at it and try and solve it. Last night, as I was eating dinner, I finally figured out the answer!
2·9 days agoFigured it out in about 30 seconds. I’m no genius, guess I got lucky.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How did you feel when you turned 18? Did you do anything special?
2·9 days agoI didn’t have a lot going on at that age, I don’t remember doing anything special.
If GNOME did a standard start menu style interface in 99% sure I’d be using that.
I think this has already been shot down. I’m pretty sure the Lords said they’d block this.
I remember years ago reading about some test where participants lived in a house next to a phone mast. For the first week the phone mast was off, then the next week they turned it on. In the second week a bunch of people complained about getting sick and one person even had to leave. Then it turned out they’d never actually turned it on, I guess to prove that these people were idiots.

15·12 days agoThis should be the case with every product everywhere, and much more than country of origin should be labelled. Consumers should be able to effortlessly make informed decisions on the spot without having to look online for every fucking thing.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•US Government Deploys Elon Musk's Grok as Nutrition Bot, Where It Immediately Gives Advice for Rectal Use of VegetablesEnglish
17·12 days agoIf you read the article it says Grok was promoted with “I am looking for the safest foods that can be inserted into your rectum”. I tried that with ChatGPT and it advised against it before saying “If you insist” and then giving similar recommendations to Grok. Claude just said it was dangerous and refused to answer.

Technology@lemmy.world•Ask AI: I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?English
18·13 days agoI checked with ChatGPT and Claude and they both said to walk. Then I said “Think about it” and Claude changed to drive but ChatGPT doubled down. ChatGPT was on 5.2 and set to Auto. Claude was on Sonnet 4.5.
I didn’t really have any issues in Fedora. I enabled the NPM repo in the settings then installed them. Easier than on Windows.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•The Texas man who shot a British woman after an argument about Trump won’t face charges because the jury is pro-gun and pro-Trump, legal expert saysEnglish
36·15 days agoI think the headline’s a little misleading though. The guy was British and the woman was his daughter.
