On the one hand you are right, if someone puts in a lot of time and effort to create a book. And it becomes a hit and gets a movie deal, I do believe they should be rewarded for that.

On the other hand, out of the tens of thousands of books written each year how many get turned into a movie? 1 or 2 maybe on average? And how much of the book is in the movie? I’ve both read Mickey7 and seen Mickey17. And while they both have some things in common, they are basically completely different stories. Should we really compromise the rules for everyone because of this very rare exception?

And I also feel like movies are caught in a slump the past years, with very few original stories being made. All remakes, reboots and super hero crap. If more stories were available for free use, how much would that influence new story creation? Very hard to say really.

As with all art, nothing is made in a vacuum. Everything builds on each other, everything is influenced by other things. I can’t help but thing about what the community did with 3D printing once the patents expired. Having stuff available to use can only be a good thing right?

But I don’t really know, you make a very good point. In a world where all kinds of art gets devalued all the time, I feel like we should celebrate artists and the art they make. I like to fuck around with creating my own art in my free time and have made stuff for friend and family. Even sold series of hundreds of units in the past. But it’s not my day job and I consider myself an absolute amateur. Maybe if UBI was a thing, it would be the thing I put most of my time into.

I hate our world revolves around money and capitalism. It leads to difficult situations like this one, where copyright holds us back and mostly benefits large mega corps. But on the other hand, we must support artists for everything they do.

I use a dongle and get better audio quality than I ever had on an integrated jack. I really don’t care if a phone has the jack. If I want something compact on the go, I use bluetooth ears. If I want to listen to high quality audio, I use the dongle with a quality DAC with proper headphones.

I hear this argument a lot and partly I agree, but partly I disagree.

It’s still your asshole, it’s never going to be clean. Sure it might be clean after using the bidet (if you use soap) or if you use the shower (you do clean your ass in the shower, right chat?). But it’s not going to stay clean, your asshole isn’t some hermetically sealed airlock. Bacteria are going to leak out. People also fart all the time, causing even more nasties to leak out.

Elsewhere on the body, people do try to keep clean (hopefully), so cleaning shit there with just some paper isn’t good enough. I think you are trying to solve a legal issue using a technological solution. The issue isn’t where his connections are coming from, the issue is where he’s a resident. It’s probably related to taxes or some other legal thing.

I meant “We” as in humanity in general. I agree it’s the rich assholes that are a lot of the drive behind this. But I’ve also seen this kind of research being done for the sake of research, in universities for example.

The thing that really pisses me off sometimes is that even if this current “AI” shit somehow morphs into something resembling true AGI and is able to take over a whole lot of jobs, that’s not a good thing! That’s not something anybody should want at all. It means flooding the job market with a whole lot of folk, with skills that are no longer valid (since the AI can do it). Maybe some people keep their jobs and are more of a supervisor kind of thing to the AI or can work alongside the AI somehow, but a big number of people simply won’t have jobs anymore and can’t be easily employed again. We currently have no social structures in place to deal with this situation, it would be absolutely terrible. Furthermore as the AI thing can work 24/7 with no breaks, no vacation, no sickness and only requires energy, the value of the work being done goes down by a lot. So even the people that are still employed would need to compete and wages would inevitably drop. Do we honestly expect all the CEOs, owners and other rich folk to suddenly have a change of heart and start sharing their wealth? Not very likely I think. All that money they intend to make they will keep for themselves. They pay millions for accountants, tax specialists and lawyers, in order to not pay any taxes. They hate poor people, they hate social systems, they just want all the money for themselves. But even they will in the end be betrayed, since with the job market crashing, the economy will also crash. It doesn’t matter how cheap you can produce the products with AI, if there isn’t anyone with money to buy shit.

Now personally I don’t think the current AI shit can do those things. It’s all marketing hype and a big inflated bubble which will pop in the next few years. LLMs are deeply flawed and can never become anything resembling AGI. But like, why are we even trying. It’s Pandora’s box and we need to keep a lid on it. Our current world is ruled by capitalism and that won’t do well if labour is suddenly basically free.
