What is this site all about?: SPFC.ORG is a high-content web site devoted to detailed information regarding the Smashing Pumpkins. It is a collaborative effort to provide the highest level of content with minimal maintenance requirements.
Why make Yet Another Smashing Pumpkins Site?: While many other sites also contain large amounts of content, updating and maintaining these sites can be a formidable task. This site differs in that it stores nearly everything in a database, so that a change made in one place (say, a song title) is instantly reflected everywhere else on the site. In addition, content maintainers use an online data-entry application to enter and update information, which means changes can be made extremely quickly and easily. Because of this technology, a simple song lookup will yield lyrics, guitar & bass tabs, concert information, release information... all a click away, and all searchable.
How long did all this take?: The original concept and planning began in January of 1997. The first design prototypes turned up that summer, and a perl-based code prototype near the end of the year. Some people left the group, others joined, and several months-long gaps occurred where nothing really happened. In mid-1998 the code base was moved to a middleware scripting language, using Sybase for data storage. Another spurt of development stopped with yet another loss of interest. Finally, the last continuous burst of effort started early in 1999. Design and functionality development continued while data was entered, and after continually pushing it off for years now, a final launch deadline was established for June 10, 1999. So, basically, from start to launch, including all the large gaps in development time, almost 2.5 years. :)
