While I don't think anyone would actually be using that in the near
future, can't you just rename it to NEWS-2008 or something? (Or manually
retagging and then deleting if nothing else.)

* no historically important data is lost (just kidding)
* problem solved
Just because I've seen people argue in favor of keeping historical
branches and stuff, and while I don't see a lot of value, it might be
needed at some point.
