First Contact

Sgt. Alden peered around the outcrop of rock on which he was leaning at the low building in front of him. His mind went back to the recording he had heard in the Comms centre an hour before-

'There seems to be a disturbance outside, I....I think I hear gunshots....clear the room everybody......(interference).....where's the.......Oh God, what IS that?.................(muffled shout from another scientist)......Dr. Olsen, are you alright? For God's sake, can't you............(silence).

Alden could just make out the body of a security guard on the floor to the right of the research facility building, the three Hab units standing behind. This was a remote scientific research station, very small, but regularly served with supplies from a light shuttle that called twice a month. The work was relatively unimportant, but all attempts were being made to gain greater knowledge of this Northern Hemisphere of the planet, discovered a mere 68 years before. The South was settled in many places, with some large towns and even cities. Large mining corporations, eager to exploit the vast riches that no doubt lay beneath the surface of this enormous planet, had set up mining camps, then huge facilities and refineries, taking advantage of lucrative licences issued by a government in a hurry to establish a stable world, and who needed resources to be supplied as quickly as possible to achieve their aims. The military, of course, were seconded all over the planet to address the paranoia felt in higher echelons that other greedy civilisations were eyeing this, their greatest prize.

Alden muttered into his comms mike; 'Jena, are you in position?'

Corporal Jena's voice came clearly through his earpiece, 'Copy that'.

'Moving now, three possible contacts detected in the area, all to our front at the moment, hold where you are'

'Copy'.

The Sergeant looked back at his fire team and signalled that they were moving out towards the research building. As they carefully stalked up  to the west side of the building, Alden kept an eye on the screen of his wrist data unit. The three red blips were moving slowly towards them, converging on the clutch of buildings.

A bead of perspiration trickled down his temple- was the data feed correct? This planet still had some magnetic variations that the comms boys hadn't yet worked out. Was there someone or something waiting for them beyond the building? He whispered into his mike again: 'Jena, move into those woods to the north of the facility, and see if you can get eyes on anything that might be giving me these readings.'

'Moving now Sarge' came Jena's reassuring voice.

Another blip moved on the wrist display, and Alden realised that he had to make a move or they could be overwhelmed if these possible enemy forces moved around them. Making the decision, he motioned the fire team forward across the front of the building and swung around the corner to find the cause of the radar blips. Five figures wearing curious red-sheened body armour were crouching in the lee of the building, their unfamiliar weapons to hand. They wore no helmets, and their skin was a startling blue colour, surmounted with hair of an even lighter blue. All this information entered  Alden's brain a split second before he gave the order to open fire. His well-drilled team instantly poured fire on to the alien figures, and watched three figures go down instantly.

Recovering from their surprise, the red-clad monsters returned fire, their laser rifles scything at the troopers and dropping one. Behind them, Alden could see another squad of 'Reds' turning in their direction, weapons coming up to train on them. Before he could call a warning, this second squad opened fire at them, carelessly aiming through the remainder of their comrades, as if these lives were immaterial. Sergeant Alden felt the searing burn as a Red with a heavy laser targeted him and sliced through his armour as if it was just so much paper. As he fell forward he saw the other members of his fire team had fallen, smoke whisping from armour that had been cut open with ease. In his earpiece he could hear excited shouting, but could not make it out, and gently slipped away.

To the north of the facility, Corporal Jena had been listening to the firefight through his own earpiece, and when the cries of pain and fear crackled through it, he frantically called out to Alden and other members of the fire team, but received no reply. He led his own team across a clearing and took cover just inside the tree line to see if he could spot the enemy that had accounted for the lives of his comrades. He just had time to make out the positions of these unearthly creatures before he directed fire from comrades. He saw one alien figure stagger back and fall under the weight of fire, but the enemy seemed to have no fear of being caught in the open, and stood their ground, returning fire with grim ferocity, slicing the trees and undergrowth with searing beams of light. From the corner of his eye, Jena spotted the survivors of the first firefight skirting around the front of the building, re-appearing on the other side, to add their firepower to the assault.

He watched as one alien hefted the heavy laser on to his shoulder and swung round to his bearing. He was no coward, but someone had to return and give a report to Headquarters. With a brief glance, he looked towards his fallen brothers, then took the remainder of his team and melted into the woods.

So, this is a 'dramatised' account of a solo game I had today- very simple and quick, using some expanded FUBAR rules kindly supplied to me by Vulture, and bolting on the solo/campaign rules from SA5150 with my own variations. The indigenous troops were all 'Regular', and the Aliens were Veteran, my thinking being that any expeditionary or scout force would be made up of good quality troops. Miniatures were from Rebel, Armies Army, and the casualty figure was from GZG. The Research building was from Critical Mass Games, the Hab domes from The Ion Age, and the grav sled from Old Crow. The game was played over my own hand made hex terrain from Warbases.

It was a quick and simple game, mostly to test out the amalgamation of these rule sets, but it was a bit of fun. I have a hankering to expand the background of my imaginary universe, with the threat from the ruthless 'Red Menace', and incorporate the story into similar AARs, but with more thought and detail- does anybody have any ideas or (polite) suggestions as to whether I should pursue this?
Obviously I am no Sci Fi author, but I feel I would like to build the story and introduce actual characters (well, apart from poor old Sergeant Alden- his race is run!).

Anyway, if you have struggled down this far, thanks very much for persevering, and if you have commented, thanks for that too!

Oh, and Happy New Year for next week!

A Few More Armies Army..........

I have to confess to having taken the day off work today as it is my birthday (don't ask, it's too embarrassing) so I have taken a few self-indulgent hours to paint my other new Armies Army figures, the PLA/Sino forces.

Since I started this blog, I have agonised over the standard of my figure painting, as a lot of posts I see display a level of competence that I cannot possibly emulate. However, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that if I want to move some of the enormous backlog of minis I would like to paint, then I will have to compromise a bit, so these figures, and the Unknown Enemy figures from my previous post have had a fairly simple treatment, using washes and dry brushing. For the wargames table, I guess they are good enough!

So, here are the minis I have painted today, the PLA/Sino Forces from Armies Army:

Brush-on grey undercoat from Vallejo, base colour of GW Dheneb Stone, wash of Army Painter Strong Tone, then dry brush of base colour again- that's just about it, apart from boots and weapon details.

I also finished the rest of the Enemy Unknown, so here is a collective picture of these minis too:

I have made a start on the 'Hab' units I bought from The Ion Age recently. As usual, I have sort of pinched their colour scheme to a certain point, but it looked so effective! I like a well-weathered look, so plenty of staining and washes. They fit beautifully on the Warbases hexes I use for my terrain as well, so that's a bonus!

All the above items need varnishing and static grass adding in order to hide the lack of attention to detail in the basing, but as I'm away for a few days from tomorrow, I wanted to make a quick post before I go.

Having seen Eli's preview of some of the new releases fron Jon at GZG, I committed a few measly quid on 4 packs of the new sculpts. They are really good, and Jon was kind enough to send me a few samples of upcoming ranges too- they are all great sculpts- and so my determination to cut back on hobby spending will be sorely tested. However, thanks Jon, I'm really looking forward to painting these guys too!

Thanks for looking in as always, and helpful comments are welcome!

Armies Army 'Enemy Unknown'.

I received a small package of miniatures earlier this week, and had to push some of them to the front of the queue. They are some of the latest offerings from Armies Army, and come under the heading of Enemy Unknown. Anyway, I promised Keith from Armies Army that I had some of his minis in the pipeline, so here they are, unvarnished and without a bit of finishing on the bases. a very unchallenging paint scheme I'm afraid, but I actually like the simplicity.

I would like to paint some of the PLA/Sino minis soon as well, but my hobby time is limited, like so many of you out there! Thanks for taking the time to take a look!

Armies Army gets a Commander!

In between my weekend chores, grass cutting and other such domestic boredom, whilst watching the Lions, I managed to sneak in a few minis as no-one was looking!

It's a mixed bag, back to Sci Fi from the Napoleonics, from 3 different manufacturers:

First up, my Commander from Armies Army's Neo-Brits:-

This is a quirky figure- perhaps not anatomically correct- but this style is what draws me to these figures, they have a certain charm.

To back him up, another Armies Army mini, toting, as you can see, a vicious looking minigun. Any miniature with a minigun is all right by me! I believe this figure is in power armour, judging by the improved carapace armour and the exo-skeleton support to the legs....

Following that, here is another figure in power armour (I believe), from GZG, one of their latest releases. I saw some of these painted up on Mr. Harold's blog, Clear Horizons (and if you don't follow it yet, do yourself a favour and trip along there- fantastic blog) and it motivated me to trial a paint job. Nice mini with plenty of detail.

Lastly, a figure I've had for a while, primed and based but sadly neglected, from Khurasan, I don't recall which pack, but it's a nice simple paint scheme for a robot- Vallejo oily steel, black wash, oily steel drybrush, and a little white detailing.

So I've assembled them for a group shot, though no-one seems to want to smile for the camera!

There we are then, I'm just off to stoke up the barbecue- lovely weather here in the UK at the moment, so I shall be looking for something frosty to drink while I cover the washing in smoke. Adios Amigos!!

Oddzial Osmy and others.....

It has been a while since my last post- I suddenly came to the conclusion that as there was so much brilliantly painted and modelled stuff out there, who would want to look at what I'm up to? Anyway, encouraged by the kind words of Jay (of 'Jay's Miniature Enterprises' blog-excellent entertainment) I have plucked up courage again, so here goes.

I have finished off my first squad of Armies Army Future Brits

and here they are, and following Jay's excellently painted Oddzial Osmy Media crew, here is my offering, painted about a month ago.

Also, in the 'OO' camp, yesterday, whilst watching the Lions v Wallabies rugby match, I did these two excellent minis from their Vistula Legion range- long range reconnaissance pack.

There have been other figures, but nothing particularly new. I have received a lot of terrain from Mad Mecha Guy recently, several buildings, the road and walls pack, containers etc, and will post some pictures when a reasonable amount is painted.

Finally, here are a couple of pics of future projects. My first foray into wargaming was Napoleonic, so having scoured the web for opinions about the best 15/18 mm figures in this era, a lot of people recommend AB Miniatures, although I realise that this is purely subjective. Anyhow, I ordered a few to paint as mini dioramas, as I can't see myself painting up a new mountain of lead- I'm in way over my head as it is!

French Hussars, two prone 95th Riflemen (I've just been re-watching the boxed set of 'Sharpe' DVDs) and a British and French sapper. I also have a 9 pounder British cannon and crew lurking in the drawer.

And last but not least, I based up these GZG trucks I bought recently. There's just something about these chunky vehicles I really like!

Thanks for looking in, and commenting if you have a mind to do so!

Armies Army Commonwealth Brits

Having posted a single figure from this range last week, I managed to paint a few more during a hectic weekend, so here is my first 'half squad'!

Once again, I found them great fun to paint. It's a fairly limited palette, but in theory, that should take me less time. Unfortunately, theory and reality seldom seem to coincide in my experience, but it didn't take any pleasure away from the painting.

As I have a good number of this range to paint, I'm wondering if I should attempt some form of camouflage for the Commandos, just for a bit of variety. I'm always unsure about camo at this scale- I find it difficult to achieve in 15mm- but I would like to try. Then there are the figures in power armour......should I do a different scheme for these as well? Decisions, decisions.

As usual, helpful comments welcomed!

Armies Army Brits- First Paint.

I received my Armies Army Brits from the Kickstarter at the beginning of the week, and although my time has been severely limited, I have managed to do a test paint of one figure, so here are a couple of pictures.
I find these minis to be full of character, and great to paint. Thanks Keith, I'm really enjoying these!

Belated Happy New Year!

I would just like to wish all those who occasionally look in to this blog a very Happy New Year, and thanks to those bloggers who have wished us all the same.

I was hoping to post pictures of my last Armies Army figures before Christmas, but events overtook me. However, I can now post pictures of the last few militia and the Spetznatz.

I posted pictures of 5 of the Militia last time, so here are the rest.

I have tried to keep a common theme going with all of these, whilst trying to differentiate between the various troop types, so the body armour is the same colour, but the fatigues a different colour.

These are the first 'Spetznatz' I did. I think I was a little heavy handed with the matt varnish, and as I subsequently painted the upper half of the weapons a different colour (I did paint them white in a Star Wars Stormtrooper moment)  I tried to matt varnish them afterwards with a brush and Vallejo matt varnish, but they insisted in staying gloss!

The rear view is a little clearer...

And finally, front and back of the others. These have been varnished a little more carefully.

Thanks to all those who have commented on the blog last year. I enjoy the feedback, and have had great help and advice from many quarters. I look forward to hearing from you this year, and I will try to bring a variety of pictures of figures and vehicles  from several manufacturers, and some home made terrain and various buildings. I am just completing some Hummers and other 20/21st Century vehicles suitably distressed to fill out my 'Rusk' army along with the APCs I posted last time, and when these are done I'll do a picture of the whole army.

I am currently waiting some vehicles from Brigade Models that I ordered before Christmas. They have a tank which resembles the 'Blower' tanks from Old Crow, and as the latter are currently unavailable, I took advantage of the sale to get a couple of Brigade's version.

I have had another dabble with the airbrush, this time on some home built scenery so I'll hopefully get pics of that up soon.

Thanks for looking in!

Jingle Bells and all that swaddling........

With just a few working days to go before the Christmas break, I just wanted to post a few more pictures, especially as I have just finished a few of Armies Army militia. Over the holidays I hope to have a few games, and crack on with my air brush- plenty of projects lined up.

Firstly, a front and back view of the figures from the Armies Army Militia range. They are basically the same colour scheme as my other RUSK troops, to give some continuity, but this time with blue fatigues. I have tried to give a two-tone effect like modern sun glasses by adding a little gold/brass to the lenses, but it  doesn't really show up. I have another 5 of these to paint.

A couple of views of Khurasan's Exterminators in Extreme Environment Suits. I have to declare that I have shamelessly stolen this colour scheme from a guy called Sebastian Stuart who has a site called eastern-empire.com. I'm not proud, but it was such a fantastic scheme that I couldn't help myself. If you have a minute, check his versions out- they are much better than these, with some clever designs on the helmet.

Here's the others from the set. These are probably my favourite miniatures from Khurasan.

Last up, Khurasan's Seal/DEVGRU minis. I think I had 'Black Hawk Down' in my mind when I painted these.

That's the lot for this post. I had a bit of an epiphany whilst painting the RUSK Militia- I realised that I have probably been using paint that is too thick all these years, I guess because I didn't think it would cover so well thinned down, and was too lazy to give it a second coat. Now I realise that this will come as no surprise to you out there, but I'm a bit slow on the uptake. I can see now how it can produce a tidier result, with a little more control, and I can even try a bit of blending! Maybe I'm trying to run before I can walk........

So, thanks for looking in, if anyone is looking in. I want to get some pictures of Armies Army Spetsnaz on the blog before Christmas, but being the holiday season, I can see distractions ahead!

That being the case, I should like to wish all of you who visit a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Happy New Year, with plenty of hobby related fun!
