Chowing down at "Proud Bird" restaurant amongst Aviation History

Hi Kids,  Here we are still in LA, once again on the approach path to the LAX runway.  This time we're a little further away and on the south side on the landing threshold.  There's a restaurant named "Proud Bird" which I've wanted to go to for years, and we finally made it there.  Inside the building they've got a huge amount of aviation pictures and museum type displays, we were in a rush so only took pictures of the outside.  Maybe on my next trip I'll be able to pay more attention to the rest.  Here's a P-38, sitting outside the terrace.
And some groovy nose art on the other side of the P-38's cockpit.
 Looks like an F6F Hellcat.
With an Avenger next to it.

It ain't all WW2, here's an X-1!  Is it the one our man Chuck Yeager took through the sound barrier?  Maybe....
The Bamboo Bomber!  To be honest, this looks like a Beech 18.  Could I be wrong?  Probably.
Told you we were close to the runway.  The DC3 sits idle while commercial air keeps getting it done in the background.
An A-4 Skyhawk.  Called the Spad during the Vietnam war.  I think this is what McCain was flying when he was shot down over North Vietnam. His probably had a different paint scheme.  They used them in the movie "Top Gun" as Aggressors.  The Blue Angels used them after the F-4's, no doubt mechanics everywhere rejoiced at the change.  Exxon probably didn't dig it as much.

A Spad of another era, a World War One Spad 13.  Our boys flew them against the Huns.

A MiG-15.  About 25 years ago the Chinese started selling these to US collectors/pilots.  IIRC you could pick one up for about US$50,000, complete with guns and ammo. Nobody told the Chinese to unload them.  Apparently the FAA took a real dim view of those first shipments.
Looks like a Fokker D7.  A plane outlawed by treaty at the end of the WW1.
Another Korean War relic; Trainer version, T-33.  Fighter version, P-80.  Probably not a huge difference at this point.  A couple years ago there was one on the airshow circuit.

A Boeing 777 blasts by on the glidepath.
While a Boeing 747 positions and holds for take off clearance.

Out in front of the restaurant are some pedestal mounts.  This one is a P-51.  Looks like it could be a Red Tail.
And an F4U Corsair.  Why are the wings bent like that?  To keep the 14 ft prop from hitting the ground!
With a nod to the Brits, a Spitfire.  Three bladed prop, bubble canopy, maybe a Mk5?

Last but not least, a SPD Dauntless, the plane that won the Battle of Midway!  And thereby decided WW2 in the Pacific!  That could be my brother and nephew.  Maybe.
While its obviously not a plane, I thought this car sticker was amusing.  It was on a Dodge Durango.  Yep, that's my reflection.  Maybe.

Club Games Day Great War Game

My second game at the GameOnGw Games day at the Cage in High Point NC was a Great War game game mastered by ChuckarooBob. Chuckaroo had devised a scenario based in Mesopotamia were a group of American archaeologists had discovered something big and had called for help to secure the dig site. The Ottomans also heard the call and sent a force to capture it for the Empire. The objectives of the game for both sides were to secure the site and the archaeologists. I tried getting Chuckaroo to change the objective to capture or kill but he stuck to his guns. Unknown to us there were also a set of random encounter that could happen when entering certain terrain pieces. The players were Shaun Watson and his buddy Brian playing the allies, while John Bays and I played the Turks.

The Allied starting force. Two platoons of two squads, a towed gun with two half tracks, a light horse squad, several machine guns and several command sections.

The Turkish Side. Two platoons with three squads, an Askari cannon, several machine guns and several command groups.

The Allies move out. Half of their force moving across the table straight toward the Turks and the other half heading for the objective.

The Turks decimate the allied machine gunners and stop the two artillery half tracks.

The Askari cannon fires a short round.

The Archaeologists rally round the flag and wait.

Direct hit! The allied cannon come into play and destroys one of the Turkish machine guns.

The Light horse round the Turkish flank.

The Light horse charge into the Turks and the Turks stand.

The Askaris turn and form for the charge.

The Askaris charge into the swirling melee trying to save the Turks.

Captain Von Shootsalot moves his askaris into the jungle to get the Sikhs and discovers a LION! Shaun and I roll off and I lose so the Lion attacks the askaris and not the Sikhs.

The Archaeologists fall back to the colors.

The Light Hose go down. Sorry about the blurry pics this is when the batteries started to go in my camera, so the stability function stopped working.

The Sikhs and Askaris fight in the jungle while the Lion attacks both sides. The Askaris that finished off the Light Horse move up to join the fight in the jungle.

Under fire from the Askari cannon the Allies run into the jungle for cover and find a Cape buffalo herd.

The Americans move up past the temple to join the fight in the jungle. The orange dice is the famous curse dice, in case you can't come up with the proper curse for a given situation in game you can roll the dice for a good one.

The Turks make a run for the objective.

The Askari cannon targets the Cape buffalo herd and scores a direct hit. There may have been another target but the shell scattered onto the herd.

The objective is revealed as a STAR GATE! Can you say cross genre.

STAMPEDE! The surviving buffaloes run away from the shell explosion and toward the Askairs.
We ended up calling the game after this. We had started the game in the afternoon out on the loading dock the Cage is in. Great while the sun is up but bad once the sun goes down. The last couple round of the game I was using my camera to see the figures on the table. I had a good time and we introduced a couple new players to the game.

GameOnGw Games Day

On 14Nov09 I attended the GameOnGw Gamesday at The Cage gaming space in High Point, NC. I took my Mordheim Tilean war band and some of my Pulp figures to possibly use in ChuckarooBob's planned Great War game. I packed everything the night before and was halfway to the Cage when I realized I had left my camera so sorry no pictures.
I chatted with the lads until Chuckaroo showed. I got the Italian paratrooper light machine gunners and another Italian paratrooper heavy machine gunners Chuckarro had picked up for me at Fall In. We set up and then played a rousing game of Great War ran by him. It was early war with the Brits verses the Turks. It was a meeting engagement were but the Brit made it to cover and stayed so us Turks had to root them out. I controlled a Turkish company and 2 machine guns. I moved up, set the machine guns and manage to decrew the only British Field gun but then had a platoon of Turks decimated by British grenadiers. My commander charged in to slay the Grenadiers and killed several before the British command charged in and killed him. The Grenadiers went on to charge my two machine guns while the British command watched them go. The last grenadier destroyed one of the machine guns but died in his attempt. British cavalry arrived behind the turkish positions but were beaten off in a vicious close combat. This I left the Turks with a Marginal victory. Chuckaroo played another Great War game but I broke out the Mordheim figures for a couple games.
My first game was against Mike and his Dwarf band. I helped him get his band together and then we played an ambush scenario were by band was spread out all over the table and some off table while Mikes's dwarfs showed up on a random table edge. They showed on an edge near one of my warriors and were in combat by the second turn. Mike proceeded to rapidly put three of my models out of action and I had to start taking rout tests. the dwarfs are just tough as nails and I had to get lucky to put one down. What followed was about an hour of hard core Mordheim, with me making more than sixteen rout tests before I finally failed and bolted.
The next game was a four player game using the pool Scenario. There was a pool with a pile of wyrdstone shards in it in the middle of the table. The goal is to search the pool get the shards and get back off of the table. I took the honor less dog approach and jumped the closet war band, which was Shaun W's Reiklanders, while my heroes made a dash for the pool and searched for shards. I put several of Shaun's guys down and he ended up routing off the table. I found three of the possible six shards and decided that was good enough and left the table so the last two players could fight over what was left.
I had a great time at the games day and look forward to the next one.
