Catching up on posting art journal pages

Hi all, hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

I've been missing in acting, busy with all kinds of stuff, but jumped back in in February.  Made a bunch of scrapbook pages and am just now getting around to posting the pictures.  Please forgive the quality.  I wanted to get it done quick, and didn't bother with my photo cube.

This was done in my handmade journal and says,
"Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations."
After layering a tree cut out from a magazine,
I used a bunch of stencils and acrylic paint to add some of my favorite colors.
The sentiment was computer generated from one of my many quotes I collect.

This one turned out better than I expected.  I'm not a green person, but wanted to have
the trellis look, so I layered some modeling paste through a harlequin stencil then painted green and let it drip through the stencil area.  I also used a hear stencil for the blues and my finger to create the circles.  The picture is from Etsy.  The frame is actually kraft card stock that I used distress ink and post it notes to cut the corners and swipe the ink across to create a woodgrain effect.
The sentiment reads:
"It takes courage to grow up and become who you truly are"

Just like I don't care for green, I'm not huge fan of orange, but I'm trying to move outside my comfort zone and try new things.  I layered a bunch of old book pages that I god from Etsy and then added some circles with modeling paste.  I then used Gelatos to shade the circles.  Yummy texture!
I used some glossy accents for the small circles after doodling on them.
The sentiment reads:
"To eliminate the inner turmoil, we must focus or attention inward and act with loving kindness to ourselves and each other".

Okay, this is me.  I found the girl online from clip art and colored her with my Copics before cutting her out.  I used the art script stencil and another one with words on it (believe/Hope).  I mixed some color with the modeling paste for the words.  Lots of bottle cap circles and bubble wrap as well as some script stamping & doodling.  The quote reads:
"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tunes without the words and never stops at all.
I love the pink, teal and blue mix here.

Uh Oh, orange.  And who would have thought orange and teal look good together?
The background is Tim Holtz' mélange tissue paper with an orange wash.  I then added depth by going darker orange around the edges with acrylic paint before stenciling some chickenwire.  I added some modeling past for the small boxes (tiles?) by coloring it with some orange paint before applying.  The circles were colored & shaded with Gelatos (love, love, lovin' 'em).
I also stamped some random stamps, (homemade ones are the corners and the hearts) and a Penny Black flower.  I drew the 3 hanging hearts, colored them in and added some glossy accents.
The quote reads:
"Life always offers you a second chance, it's called Tomorrow"

This one was done in my altered Composition art journal dedicated for Julie Nutting images.
(I took out 1/2 the pages and glued 2 pages together before coloring them with various shades of gesso).
Apparently, loving the pink and purples, huh?
Started off with a multicolored circle tissue paper and then painted with acrylics over the top with a darker shade of pink around the edges.  I then added some strips of joint mesh tape from the hardware store before stenciling some purple circles, after which I doodled with my white Posca pen.
I mixed a little bit of orange into modeling paste for the smaller circles, added some script in archival potting soil and a heart stamp on the right.
This Julie Nutting image was paper pieced (love script/print as skin) and then colored her with Copics before decoupaging her down.  Final touch was the hanging hearts I drew and added glossy accents to.  The quote reads:
"Never apologize for being sensitive or emotional.  Let this be a sign that you have a big heart and aren't afraid to let others see.  Showing your emotions is a sign of strength" by Brigitte Nicole.

Okay, can you tell just by looking at this that I was having a bad day?
I started with some modeling paste in the center of the 2 pages and combed it out to the top and bottom.  I then added some turquoise and blue acrylic paint around the edge with a little bit of that mesh joint tape.  I have an UNUSED fly swatter (lol) that I tore apart and stenciled through to give the white grid.  Probably the only positive thing about this page is that I finally broke down and ordered some Cambric from France Papillon (#LOVEHER).  I colored with Dylusions (starting to HATE that they're water soluble, bad me) in blue (see left below the crazy).  I colored the modeling paste with some copper paste and hand wrote the quote, which reads:
"Dear Stress ... Let's break up"
Good way to get feelings out, because I felt better after it was done.

Ahhh ... back to pretty in pink.
I started off by decoupaging some polkadot scrapbook paper randomly on each side.
I used tiny punchinella and modeling paste for the dots and then colored with pink, letting the darker color drip down and sideways.  I finished with some random stamps and added two laser cut chipboard butterflies and a leaf around the Penny Black flower stamp.  The sentiment reads:
"Inhale confidence, Exhale Doubt.
I really liked this one.

Okay, back to my Julie Nutting journal - ugh, green, you say - again, trying to not restrict myself to my favorite colors.
I started off stenciling embossing versamark/powder and the basketweave stencil before adding some Tim Holtz Melange and old book pages.  Then I started with the greens and yellows.
After making the circles with Gelatos and shading them, I randomly stamped some chickenwire and a couple of Julie Nutting's borders.
The butterflies and the circle butterfly were done with modeling paste through a stencil.  Afterwards, I rubbed some gold paste over the top gently.  I drew the caterpillar and paperpieced the Julie Nutting figure before shading her with inktense pencils.  Her crown has been Stickled (the only glitter in my house is that which has been encased in a glue!).  The sentiment reads:
"When you find yourself cocooned in isolation and can't find your way out of the darkness, remember that this is where the caterpillars go to grow their wings".
Okay, so green's not so bad, lol.

I just adore all things Victorian, as well as purples and pinks, can you tell?  This one was fairly simple.  I criss crossed some strips of scrapbook paper and then shaded them with inktense pencil.  Home made flower stencil was pounced with some pink acrylic and then doodled on.  Very little stamping on this one.  The beautiful lady is from Etsy, and again, the frame is kraft cardstock, smeared with Vintage Photo distress ink.  The quote says:
"Confidence is not - They will like me ...
Confidence is - I'll be fine if they don't"
Love that saying!

Once again, back to my Julie Nutting journal with this cute image.  She was paper pieced and shaded with Copics.  I first layered some scrapbook papers at the corners and then washed a purple background.  Used a heart stencil and purple before doodling.  The circles were made with Gelatos and my finger.  I added some Tim Holtz ephemra as well as some Julie Nutting borders.  Brain fart on where the butterflies came from, but I colored them with Twinkling H20's and some script stamp.  The quote reads:
"You are amazing, remember that!"

Okay, this was another dark day - maybe that's why I used orange again, lol.
The background is the Tim Holtz Melange tissue paper then I added a color wash of orange with darker edges.  I flipped the journal upside down and used some watered down green for drippage to create some greenery before stamping some flowers and then painting color on them.  I added some circle stamps and reverse text and then doodled a bit.  The circles - oey, again? - were made with Gelatos and my finger.  The sentiment reads:
"Living with anxiety is like being followed by a voice; it knows all your insecurities and uses them against you; it gets to the point when it's the loudest voice in the room ... the only one you can hear."

Started this one with a light pink wash and then used a stencil for the grid with modeling past before  dripping some darker pink from the top and the bottom.  I added some masking tape strips and shaded them with my charcoal pencil.  I used a circle stencil for the pink dots and doodled around them.  I then added some modeling paste hearts through a stencil.  Note there is only one red heart.  The sentiment reads:
"A woman's strength isn't just about how much she can handle before she breaks, it's also about how much she must handle after she is broken"

Back to my Julie Nutting journal.  I used a lot of book page strips before applying modeling paste through a stencil with circles, numbers and letters, as well as the 3 hearts through a homemade stencil.  I then started adding the colors, blues, teals, dark blues.  After the color, I put on a couple of more book page strips and white-washed with watered down gesso.  I embossed around the hearts with red and then doodled.  The image was paper pieced and shaded with Copics before decoupaging her down.  The sentiment reads:
"Leave footprints of Love and Kindness wherever you go"
Let's all be kind to each other, huh?

Okay, broke one of my rules ... This is my "Julie Nutting Journal", but there's no Julie Nutting images - what's up?
I started with scrapbook papers from the sky down to the grass.
I then used the drippage from watered down green acrylic for the flower stems.
I had some paper I colored with my Gelli plate and cut out different sizes of circles & pasted them down.  I used back end of a paintbrush for the petals before doodling.
The bottom looked bare, so I used modeling paste and a floral stencil, wanting to keep it green, but just to add texture.  I ended up dotting the centers of the flowers with the petal colors to tie it in.
I also added modeling paste through the art word stencil where I wanted my clouds to be.
I used Gelatoes to create the clouds and then stenciled some white gesso to brighten it up.
At this point, I really liked what I came up with and thought it was too vibrant/busy to add a Julie Nutting image.  The quote says:
"Blossom by Blossom, the spring begins"

This is a canvas board I made for one of my girlies in cheer.  Lots of texture, stencils and doodling.  She's a fan of pink.  I added some flowers, some lace butterflies, as well as a sparkly "A" sticker before finishing.  I love these beautiful laser cut chipboard flourishes (forgive me, they're either Blue Fern or Dusty Attic).  There's a ribbon on top for her to hang it up on her wall.

Here's another one of my girlies - fan of mint, but couldn't keep away from the dark edges.
Again, lots of modeling past through the hearts and harlequin stencils.  Added some flowers and laser-cut chipboard flourishes and some lace to the photos and sentiment.  Can you see the sparkly 'H'?

2 of my "adopted daughters" at the Sugar Factory.  Lots of texture and stamps - this one's favorite color is purple.
Same girls, this one's favorite color is pink.  Lots to texture and doodling on this one.

Lots of chipboard, stenciling/modeling paste, glossy accents, liquid pearls and distressing here with the flowers to finish it off.

Whew ... I have to consider uploading these one at a time.

Thanks for stopping by.  Hope you liked a little of what you saw and are inspired to try something like any of these.

Have a wonderful day!

ICAD #46

For today's prompt in the Index Card a Day 61 day challenge, we were encouraged to consider using a recipe or formula.  I've tried this recipe and while it may not be quite as good as a fresh batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies, at 11:30 pm, if you're having a craving, it does in a pinch.  Yum!
It's hard to tell, but the background looked really cool before I started layering.  I took purple & made 6 different blobs, adding pale pink in increased amounts to each blob so I had 6 different shades of purple.  I then layed down some wax paper & smoodged (I know, not a word) the colors then lifted & repositioned the card several times to get an all over mottled look ... It really did look gorgeous.

Next, I used a homemade stencil with geometric shapes in an overall heart pattern to apply dark purple acrylic.  The flower was made on watercolor paper, painted a circle w/3 different colors before doodling the flower & cutting it out.  The recipe was printed out, washed with a thin acrylic purple & affixed with matte medium.  After some white & black doodling, I edged it with Archival jet black.

Have I said lately that purple is one of my favorite colors?  I like the way this looked - I may forgoe the punch and take it straight up to the kitchen.

Thanks for stopping in ... Hope you have a great day!

icad #43, #44, #45

Home for a few hours before I'm off again ... played in my studio last night and early this morning ...

This first one is an extra for one of the Daisy Yellow Art ICAD members who just had a baby on Friday, same day my sister in law got married.

First off, CONGRATULATIONS to Dawn and Bernie ... It was a beautiful ceremony, beautiful day and a beautiful time spent with you.  Thank you for allowing us to be a part of it.

also, CONGRATULATIONS to Simi on the birth of Melody ... She is such a beautiful little girl!
This one's for Melody ...
This is a Day for Daisies digital image that I printed on irridescent cardstock & colored with Copics before adding the acrylic pink & doodles.  I used Glossy Accents for the stars, heart and halo.

The prompt for this one was violin.  I printed out an image from the web & cut it out.
For the base, I painted an index card in purple, cross-hatching, then I layered some Tim Holtz melange tissue paper before adding the violin.
I finished with a bit of white printing.

The prompt for this was to use a kokeshi doll.
I layered a sheet of paper I made on my Gelli plate with stencils I made with my Silhouette - you can definitely see the daisy stencil, which I doodled a couple of the images using gel markers.
I painted the doll with acrylics and when I was done, my current nursing studies kicked in - "Respect Cultural Differences"

The prompt for this one was to use a dala horse (what the heck is that? Yes, I had to look it up on the internet ... I'm so worldy challenged, lol.  Anyway, I used a piece of map scrapbook paper & layered it onto an index card & then distressed with vintage photo from Ranger as well as some potting soil from Archival.  The horse was painted with acrylics.  I'm challenging myself to "Explore" more (even if I can't do it physically & financially).

Hope you have a great day, thanks for popping in.

ICAD #41, #42

Day #41 for Index Card a Day ... check it out at Daisy Yellow art for more information.

The prompt for day 41 was the moon.
I started off by watercoloring the background a deep blue/purple.
I used oil pastels for the moon, applied gel medium just to the moon & when it was ALMOST dry, I rubbed the moon for some texture (it IS made of cheese, isn't it?)
I found the quote on brainyquote.com & wrote with my Signo uniball.
Short, sweet & to the point.

Day 42's prompt was text.

First, I painted the card with some blue and rose watercolors.
Then, I used gel medium to affix some Tim Holtz terminology tissue paper
and then randomly stamped some sketchy flowers in Archival potting soil.
I found the quote, again, at brainyquotes.com.
This was computer generated & affixed to the card with gel medium.

Thanks for stopping by.
Have a great day!

icad #39, #40

More fun at Index Card a Day found here at Daisy Yellow ... check it out - 61 days of making 3x5 or 4x6 pieces of art, using prompts provided, or go with your own ideas.

I'm posting these early since I have a wedding on Friday and may be busy with out of town family & whatnot ...

For day #39, the prompt was 'diagram' ...

I instantly thought of house diagrams since I used to love drawing floor plans of my dream homes, which would always change as I grew and things took more priority over others. Anyway, I drew my idea of a dream getaway - that's just for me, lol ... I drew with a Faber Castel liner and colored each room with a watercolor wash so you could still see the lines.

Day 40 - Kaleidoscope (I think this one is the one that gave me the monster headache I now have).

I drew a few circles & pencil lines as guides and then colored in sections with my Zig markers for a sort of Kaleidoscope pattern.

Thanks for stopping by ...
Hope you all have a great day!

icad # 36, 37, 38

Busy weekend, so catching up ...

Day 36 prompt was tags/labels ...
I first layered a shet of Stampin Up designer paper then strips of the backside.  Then, I distressed a tag by crinkling it and rubbing with Ranger distress ink, vintage photo before decoupaging it down.  Then I added some circles and dots in brown acrylic paint before adding the computer generated quote.  I used inktense pencil to smudge around the edges of the words and the tag.

Day 37 prompt was Lollipops ...

I used Neocolors II & water to color the background before stamping with one of my homemade stamps in Archival potting soil.  I also added a few circles with same ink.
Then, I took some Stampin Up cardstock and painted a pinwheel design then cut out 3 circles & twisted them so they'd look like one of those giant suckers (lollipop, lolli).  I shaded each ring with intense pencil & water then drew a spiral in the center.  The stem is from a piece of designer paper that I cut out.  Words are computer generated on kraft cardstock & decoupaged.  I shaded these with one of my green Pitt big brush markers & smudged.

Day 38 prompt was GREEN ...

This one was interesting ...
First, I spotted 4 different colors of green acrylic onto wax paper & folded to smoosh the colors real good.  Then I dipped the index card into the paint & lifted & moved until it was colored all over.
After it dried, I used some Ranger rock candy crackle.  Once dried, I took some Ranger vintage photo distress ink & rubbed all over.
Next came the homemade stamps with black acrylic, as well as the sentiment.

Thanks for stopping by.
Hope you have a great day!

icad #35

Today's prompt for the Index Card a Day challenge sponsored by Daisy Yellow Art was "postage stamp".  I came across this old, old set from Stampin Up and thought I'd use it on one of my leftover tea-dyed cards.
I stamped in Archival Potting soil & then drew in a silouette of some obscure queen.  I couldn't remember how francks are symbolized, so I left that out.

No, I don't know French, but I googled a little phrase and translated it.  I'm hoping no one lives at 49 rue Poncelet in Paris, lol.  I originally was going to use hub's name, but it's so decidedly not French, and since this isn't even real, I used Michael (the French pronounce it Mee-shell, so ooh la la) ...

Hope you enjoy.  Have a save and fun weekend.
Thanks for stopping in,

icad #34 - Happy Fourth of July!

The prompt for today at Daisy Yellow Art for the Index Card a Day challenge is the flag or Independence Day.  Since it's my birthday today (Happy Birthday to me!), I had to chime in on this one.
I drew the flag on and used Inktense pencils to watercolor the flag.  After, I dotted some yellow Stickles for the stars & wrote the lyrics to the song in the white stripes.
After, I masked the flag & stamped random script in the background then used Vintage Photo to smudge it up before edging w/Archival potting soil.

Hope you all have a safe and fun 4th of July!
Thanks for stopping in,
Collette

icad #33

Today's prompt for Index Card a Day sponsored by Daisy Yellow Art is "Tomorrowland" ... I wanted the bright colors that you see at night when they turn all the funky lights on, so did a background in some neon colors.  There's all kinds of spheres on tubes there, so I was guided by Tracy Scott's youtube video on the rest.
I made the stamps for the arrow, chevron and 'be' ... lots of doodling & voila!
I was looking online to see if there were any predominant colors used, and found more stuff about Tomorrowland - a music festival in Belgium - so not sure if I was on the right track here, but it is what it is.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping in.

icad# 32

Here's my 32nd card for the Index Card a Day challenge ... This prompt encouraged us to use coffee or tea ...

I crumpled up the index card & stuck it in my mug of cold tea for about 1/2 an hour.  Maybe because it was cold, but I thought it'd end up being darker ?  Oh well ...

I then layered some striped strips of designer paper & doodled some flowers on them before sewing some ribbon and lace trim.  I used my red inktense pencil to add some color to the ribbons & stamped "FUN" ... that's what I'm having doing this challenge - it's so nice to get back into the creative swing of things between the art journaling and this Index Card a Day challenge ... I'm having FUN!!!

Thanks for stopping by ... Have a great day!

Sparkle Art Journal page - Never Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle

Here is the 3rd installment in my (apparently) Prima art journal.  This little beauty is Shay and she's from Julie Nutting's Prima Doll stamp selection.

First, since this is in an altered composition notebook, each page is actually 2 pages that are sealed together with matte medium.  I then laid down two different napkin layers.  On the left is a peacock napkin, on the right is a pice with the Eiffel Tower and french things.  I accidentally ripped the page at the top, so I put some Tim Holtz tissue paper (Melange) since that stuff is stronger than ... well, it's strong!  Way thicker than your typical tissue paper.  Anyway, then I pained a thin wash of blue acrylic paint.
I added a border and leave design from cardstock and decoupaged.  It's difficult to see the petals, but I took an old book page and painted with some metallic acrylic paints (gold and bronze) before decoupaging.  You can see from the center of the flower I did the same thing, only I didn't use a metallic paint.  After they were dry, I did some doodling.  The magenta flowers are just sponged paint and doodling.
The quote was printed onto cardstock and then layered on the same old olive Stampin' Up cardstock to tie in the colors.  I used the Dylusions stamp set for 'Sparkle'.  I've got some diamond Stickles 'sparkles' leading away from the word, as well as a dot on the top of each of the letters.

Shay was paper pieced from different card stock (dress) and Neenah paper (flesh/hair) then decoupaged onto the page.  I then colored/shaded with Copics before adding her own BLING with platinum Stickles.  The heart is also a piece from that book page that I used for the flower petals.  A little doodling later, and the sentiment was added with a few more Stickles for sparkly effect.
I am really loving these Prima dolls by Julie Nutting - So perfect ... Alas, I don't have enough of them (don't we all say that about our supplies?) and will have to get more if I'm going to keep this book a "Prima Book".

Thanks for popping in ... Have a wonderful day!

ICAD #28 - Robot

As soon as I saw the prompt for robot, I thought, this might be one I missed out on.  However ... ever since I saw it, the kid's version "It's about time ... It's about space ... it's about time to slap your face!" kept going through my head & I kept seeing Will Robinson & his trusty robot, so I figured I'd give it a go.

I tried drawing the robot, but I guess I'm not a mechanically minded gal, so ended up collaging him onto the card.  The background is metallic silver acrylic paint.  I then took a Pitt fine point pen to draw in the seams and rivets of the metal background.  Once that was done, I went in with a couple of shades of brown and black Inktense pencils to age the metal a bit ... After all, the Robinson's have been lost in space for quite some time now ...

Thanks for popping in and have a great day!

Index Card a Day 2014 updates

ICAD updates ... I jumped ahead a couple of days because I'll have homework Thursday and Friday.  If you're interested in checking to see what all the fuss is about, click on the Index Card a Day for June & July link for more details.

This first one is a take on an album cover - I chose Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA album.  I colored him in with Copics while I used Inktense pencils for the flag.

For this next one, the daily prompt was to use a magnifying glass - I took it uber-literal ... see that candy heart on the table?  I used acrylics, Copics and inktense pencils for this one.  Hard to tell, but I used glossy mod podge for the glass in the magnifying glass to make it shinier.

For this next one, the prompt was a maple leaf.  I had the background already collaged onto the index card, I just added a blurb of book text that I had crumpled and inked and then a maple leaf I snagged from the internet & decoupaged it down.  I then shaded with an inktense pencil & added a little blurb on the side.

The prompt for this next one was ... wait for it ... "BROWN" ... I was sitting here wondering how other countries say the same color, VOILA!  If you look close, below each color is the name of the country that the word comes from.  Finished it off with some linear doodling and dots.

Okay, now this one, I'm not so proud of ... I'm huge Star Wars fan (not uber-fan, but close) ... and I just could NOT think of anything clever to make ... Sooooo ... I colored the back with blue acrylic wash and then wrote with a Pitt liner & added the stars.

I'm on a roll - that's 27 cards (almost in a row, taking into account the couple of days a week that I need to jump ahead) ... I'm having loads of fun being creative again.  I'm sure I'll be sorry when the 61 days are over.

Thanks for popping in ... Have a great day!

icad #22

Here's my #22 ICAD.  If you're interested in jumping in, you can go to Daisy Yellow.com for details.

I used Neocolor II's for everything (except the heart) and then painted designs on the umbrella with white acrylic paint before writing my special memories of St. Augustine.  After I had put the Neocolors away, I decided I wanted to add some love, so reached for my Copics.

Having a weird moist, green June here in Chicago, so I'm missing the beach even more!

Thanks for stopping in.

Couple of Art Journals featuring Prima Dolls

Okay, so I've been reclaiming a composition book that I bought for homework, but never use.  I pulled out about 1/2 the pages (every couple of pages, I'd tear out 2 pages & pulled the other half out through the backside) to thin the book out.  Then I used a matte medium to adhere the pages together two at a time for thickness & then gesso'd them in either clear, white or black.  I kind of like that the lines show through ever so faintly on some of the pages.

This is my first spread in the 'new' journal.  While I know they're not new to the rest of the world, since I've only been working for real in art journals since April, these Julie Nutting Prima Dolls are new to me.  I love that they're just the right size for this book ... the 1st three layouts have one of these beauties on them - thinking this may be my Prima Princess Portfolio, lol.  I love that I can paper piece or color with my beloved Copics.

I don't know what I was thinking - I'm not a fan of orange, yet - what the heck happened here?  I made the stamps in the corners, the stars and the ones that hang down (kind of like beads).    I paper-pieced "Mia's" dress then colored her in & shaded with Copics.

In between homework assignments and doodling around with art journaling and painting ceramics (need to do more of that), I've been saving my favorite quotes.  I'd like to save these quotes in my journal pages to flip back through later on and think about the meaning behind them.

This next page was all about pink, can you tell?  The name of this Prima doll is "Four" ... did Julie Nutting run out of names?  I also paper-pieced her dress and added book text to her skin before shading with Copics.  Stamps used were from Stampin-Up.  If you look close, you can see the drywall netting I laid down under the layers.  I had fun with this one, thinking of outrageous ways to describe myself, lol.

This next one was in my smaller homemade journal.  I was feeling a bit down, and forced myself to think of bright colors.  I'm glad I did.  By the time I got done with this page I was feeling decidedly better.  Burlap & Harlequin stencils were used, then I painted the simple flowers at the bottom.  I used my Cricut for the first time in 2 years (maybe the 10th time in all?) for the larger words.  This one actually is making me smile all over again - I guess it accomplished it's purpose?

Anyways, thanks for popping in for a look-see ...
Have a great day,
Collette
