Clear and helpful, could use more visuals
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2025This book is very helpful for people who have had a stroke or are helping someone who has. The book explains what to do if a stroke happens and how to take care of someone after. The advice is simple to follow and can be really useful in an emergency.
The only problem is that the book doesn’t have enough pictures or charts to explain some things. It can be a little hard to understand for people who don’t have much medical knowledge. But it’s still a good book with practical, useful advice.
Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)
I would recommend this to people who need simple advice about strokes. It’s clear and helpful, even if it’s not a fun read.

Not just for stroke survivors
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2024Wow! This book is far more than I expected.
Insightful and well written, it is a book about resilience and how to deal with setbacks in life that we all experience. Yes, excellent research specially related to stroke also included.
But I have a suggestion for a new title-
How to Thrive, Not Just Survive in life.
Well done Brent!

A unique guide for stroke survivors
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2025I haven't seen a guide targeted toward stroke survivors like this one. The author, a retired veterinarian, shares his experiences with having two strokes almost back-to-back and his recovery. The bulk of this book focuses on what to do after having a stroke, such as changing or adding new habits, strengthening parts of the body affected by the stroke, and ways to improve your health. Although this book is for stroke survivors, I learned a lot from it as someone who has not had a stroke. Many of the tips the author shares can be practiced to help prevent a stroke.

Helps cut through the confusion, especially for families
Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2025My dad had a stroke due to an AVM. I wish I had read a book like this to recognize the signs better and understand what can and cannot be done as far as home care is concerned. You’ll get a great overview as well as some practical advice and insight into medications and how to manage the emotional side of things that no one seems to want to talk about. It’s an excellent starting point, so you know more of what to ask when you go in for a medical visit or work with the care team.
