‘I was out walking the dogs early in the morning in the forest close to where I live, which is also adjacent to Valdemars Slot. I could see the sky was developing into something spectacular and so I returned to my van where, fortunately, I had my camera. It’s a short drive through the forest to the slot (castle) where I got this image of the tea pavilion and some of the castle’s other outbuildings.’ Photograph: David WhitfieldTue 19 May 2026 11.00 EDT

‘It was a rainy Sunday in February and a dog walk had been curtailed by rain. As I walked up Herne Hill I was greeted by the most amazing rainbow. I was struck by the beauty, the contrast with the dullness of the rest of the day, and how, even now I am in my 50s, a rainbow creates a frisson of joy.’Photograph: Anya Lewis

‘Rye Meads is a little wildlife haven hidden away in Hoddesdon. It’s full of amazing wildlife including water voles, a protected species in the UK due to a population decline caused by problems such as predation by invasive mink and habitat loss. I’m lucky to be able to see them so close to home and take part in water vole surveys.’Photograph: Rebekah WeatherheadExplore more on these topics
