Councillor referred over comments.

A CALDERDALE councillor has been referred to the council's standards committee after comments he made in an email about the Hillsborough report and Stephen Lawrence enquiry were published.

Clr Roger Taylor is alleged to have emailed JUST West Yorkshire, a group which promotes racial justice and civil liberties: "So is your ultra-left organisation claiming that the police actually pushed into the terraces and suffocated the victims? Are you telling me that this report is not overloaded with politically correct language rather like the Stephen Lawrence "enquiry" (a joke in itself) was? He is said to have further emailed JUST: "You are not fit to tie Sir Norman Bettison's shoe laces (I was on the WYPA for nearly three years by the way) so how dare you call for his resignation.

"As racist and anti-American Muslims once again rail against the west with their vile language of death to infidels you choose to ignore that and concentrate on Sir Norman.

"What a bunch you really are. If I thought you were getting tax-payers' money I would be the first to secure its removal!" Calderdale's deputy leader, Lib Dem Clr Janet Battye, said: "The comments made by Clr Roger Taylor are totally inappropriate and I wish to make it absolutely clear that they are in no way supported by myself or any of my colleagues.

"Clr Taylor's remarks have been reported to the council's standards committee for them to investigate whether he has broken the rules that we expect councillors to abide by all of the time. I leave that to them to come to their own judgement."

Clr Taylor, a Conservative member for Northowram and Shelf, described the emails as private.

Calls by the Examiner to the Conservative Party for a comment were not returned.
