Adult studio classes are tailored to reinforce museum exhibition themes and/or concepts. Filling a niche in the community, studio classes offer a nurturing, creative environment and provide a wonderful opportunity to advance your artistic talents. Introduction to Basketry Techniques

Inspired by the Lowcountry’s storied basket-making tradition, this course introduces a variety of techniques for the basket-curious. Learn to weave, twine, coil, and loop with foraged and store-bought natural materials. During each class, we will make a small vessel or object using a different technique and material. Practice making your own cordage, and discuss how to ethically harvest, dry, store, and prepare plant materials. All levels are welcome to discover the slow and haptic joy of this ancient activity alongside friends.

A fun still-life is an excellent way to learn to paint and build new skills. This beginner to intermediate class will invite participants to bring in and set up their own things to create a painting from. Setting up a still life will launch the exploration, helping participants to see light and color before beginning to paint.  The class will teach painting application and color mixing to create the illusion of space and volume. This class is like going to the gym—only much more fun! Participants will build observational and creative muscles studying the things they love. All materials provided.

There is no better way to enjoy the day than to paint it. Painting on location throughout downtown Savannah, this fall session will focus on the combination of architecture and nature found in the views of our beautiful squares. Start with the basic materials, add the right tools and techniques, and let painting outdoors become a lifelong passion. Learn to work in oils to create impressions of Downtown Savannah. Explore painting techniques, composition, color, and creative expression in an upbeat and encouraging atmosphere. Learn brushwork, layering, applying paint to the surface, and color-mixing techniques, and use them to express yourself in color. The class meets on-site around the Savannah area, with light walking.

Making A Photo In Paint

In this beginning-to-advanced studio-based class, students will be guided through creating a painting from their chosen personal photo. This class will take a slow approach, first discussing design and composition with in-class exercises, then exploring color theory and color mixing strategies. Finally, the last three classes will be utilized to draw and slowly paint a finished work on canvas. All materials included.

Traditions in Landscape Painting

In this beginning-to-advanced studio-based class, students will be guided through the process of creating master copies from a variety of artists to study their technical processes and mark-making. Working in oil paint, students will learn to transfer images from photos and estimate working processes by making studies from early English and French plein air artists to contemporary painters.

Each class will explore an individual artist or genre style with a discussion of unifying or key techniques of each artist or style.  Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the development of landscape painting while developing individualized painting approaches and personal styles. Creating landscapes in the studio allows you to slow down, avoid changing light, temperatures, and bugs, putting focus on technique and effects. This beginner—to—intermediate—level painting class will work from your landscape photographs to explore and build painting skills. Participants will create small, quick studies and 1 longer, extended work over the 6-week class. All materials are provided.

This class will explore drawing techniques and a variety of drawing media. Each week will feature a different material and drawing process. It is a perfect drawing class for new artists wishing to improve their drawing skills and advanced artists looking for new challenges. Through demos and practice, students will learn to draw from direct observation, gaining a sound understanding of materials and processes. This class is perfect for both beginning and seasoned drawing students. All materials are provided.

They say everything to learn in painting happens on the palette. If you’re Unsure how to make orange or feel overwhelmed selecting colors at the art supply store, this class will help. The more colors you make, the more colors you see. In this class, we will explore basic color theory, various artists, color selections, and their reasoning to understand the elements of color. This class will provide a strong understanding of the properties of color and enable more informed decisions when choosing a color. All materials included.
