Volunteers hand out food to hungry children near the Tiné Transit Camp in Chad - just a few kilometres from the Sudanese border. The Tiné Emergency Response Room aims to provide 1,700 meals a day to thousands of Sudanese refugees arriving in the area. In May 2025, the number of arrivals surged from a few hundred to as many as 3,200 per day — most fleeing attacks in Zamzam and El Fasher. In the punishing 100-degree heat, very little awaits them: food, water, and healthcare are scarce, which aid workers attribute to recent funding cuts. Many families are living in makeshift tents pieced together from tattered cloth, as the transit centre has long exceeded capacity. Thousands remain stranded, awaiting transfer from Tiné to Iridimi — but aid cuts have slowed the U.N.’s ability to move people onward. Tiné, Northeastern Chad, 4 May 2025.
