Warning, this post has some back-of-the-napkin 💸 💰 math. So it appears we've reached a significant milestone in the world of IPv4 addresses! Starting in February 2024, AWS will begin charging $43 per public IPv4 address per year. [1] Run the math for your environment, as it can add up quickly for those with many public IPs! I looked at AWS' IPv4 usage in detail just three years ago. [2] Back then, AWS possessed over 100 million IPv4 addresses, estimated to be worth approximately $2.5 billion at the time. Given the rising costs and AWS's continued acquisition of these addresses, I wouldn't be surprised if AWS's IPv4 assets could now be valued at $10 billion! Just for fun, let's do some more back-of-the-napkin math; let's say that by now, AWS' IPv4 pool is at a 50% usage of the 2020 number. So 50M IPv4 addresses are actively being used. $50M * $43 = $2.15 Billion dollars per year(!) in IPv4 rental fees! Not too shabby for something that was previously free! Now, with the financial incentives, Are you moving to IPv6 only? [1] https://lnkd.in/gpHRTSea [2] https://lnkd.in/gngnupG
Unpopular opinion: It should have always been a charge for use of the address(es).
I’m curious if it’ll speed up the adoption of IPv6
