ICANN seeks feedback on updated Maximal Starting Repertoire

17 June 2025

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is launching a Public Comment on the sixth version of the Maximal Starting Repertoire (MSR-6). It is a subset of code points in Unicode 16.0, created by following the prescriptions detailed in the Procedure to Develop and Maintain Label Generation Rules for the Root Zone with Respect to IDN Labels (RZ-LGR Procedure) in eliminating code points not eligible for the root zone. The contents of MSR version 6 (MSR-6) and a detailed rationale behind its development are available in the MSR-6 Overview and Rationale document. For more information, and to participate, please visit the MSR-6 proceeding webpage.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
