Tai's trigger finger was getting itchy.
As part of an expedition to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (near the core of the anomaly-riddled, emission-blasted Zone), he- alongside a crew of several other experienced STALKERs- had been recruited by the one and only Strelok to help clear the way. The battle north was a gruelling one, with their current obstacle being a Monolith thug known as Eidolon, and his little army, the thug in question having once forced Strelok and his team back from the plant. According to the living legend himself, Eidolon was all but unkillable, able to shrug off hundreds upon hundreds of bullets, even rockets...taking him out would be a daunting task.
And thus, a plan had been concocted. 'Recovering' a Gauss Rifle from the Monos, Tai was to get up into the Polissya hotel, with a view over the Palace of Culture- the Monos' main base in Pripyat- while Strelok, his own team, and as many hardened STALKERs as they could recruit, would attempt to draw Eidolon out into the open for Tai to shoot. The timing was perfect, the sun being to the east to keep his side of the building in shadow, and thus lessen the chances of a Monolith sniper from spotting him. He just had to be patient, as much as he wanted to start picking them off one by one- if Eidolon got wind of there being a 'rogue' Gauss Rifle out there, he might never come out...or, thanks to the gun's rather distinctive bullet trail, there'd be a round flying right back at the dragon in short order.
The attack started with an RPG whizzing into the main hall of the Palace. Striking and destroying the Monos' 'shrine' inside with a thermobaric warhead, the brainwashed army responded swiftly, with almost every window and doorway spewing lead. The ground team putting up just enough of a fight to convince the Monos the threat was genuine, while simultaneously not putting up enough of a fight to force them to retreat- starting to give ground after a few minutes, a fighting retreat to the com-block apartments across the promenade to the south of the Palace. It would help that the ground team had all thought to bring artefacts to make themselves less vulnerable to incoming fire, with smaller-calibre rifles scarcely able to harm them. A tricky endeavour, finding so many Empty, Full Empty and Wrenched artefacts, but the effort was beginning to pay off, as despite the torrent of lead flying their way, Tai could see they were all still mobile even now.
It was here that Eidolon would make his final mistake. Spotting a rather distinct, armoured SEVA suit among the Monos, Tai gritted his teeth, slowed his breathing, took aim, and slowly squeezed the trigger. He couldn't miss. The rifle making a distinctive whine as it charged up, a dull thunk accompanying the capacitors discharging and the slug being sent forth at many times the speed of sound. Tai had seen fit to tinker with the rifle before the expedition, increasing the rifle's capacitor banks to the point they'd drain the batteries far swifter, in exchange for a much higher muzzle velocity...a bit too much of an overclocking, however, as no sooner had he fired the rifle than the coils began to melt, necessitating him throwing the rifle aside, it being worthless now.
His aim, however, was true. In but an instant, the heretofore 'invincible' Eidolon was slain, the ferromagnetic slug impacting just below the neck and through sheer force alone decapitating the Monolithian. His compatriots looking on in brief horror at seeing their leader, their priest, fall...and promptly flying into a careless rage, forsaking cover in a maddened attempt to gun down the aggressors. No sooner had Tai discarded the rifle than- as predicted- a Monolith sniper pegged his location and drilled a 7.62x54R round right into his chest. Saved only by the combination of his 6B13 plate carrier and the artefacts around his waist, he was nonetheless knocked flat on his arse with a grunt of pain and an annoyed growl. Sitting up, reaching forward to pluck the pancaked bullet from out of the carrier, and then grabbing his primary weapon- a modified, rare example of an AK-103 that had made it into the Zone, he left the room to rappel down the nearby stairwell. Faster than walking, as silly as it was.
Time to jump into the fray. And Monolith would soon learn that they weren't the only ones with an Eidolon.
Hoookay, that was a bit longer than expected- that's what she said- for a little short story. Can probably guess by the art style who I got this from, if not, it's https://holtzworks.com/ again!
This is actually based on a moment I had from the STALKER: Anomaly standalone. Albeit written a little more differently, as my own assault on the Palace of Culture turned out to be much, much easier than anticipated! This picture got an honest-to-god jaw-drop when done, came out better than I'd expected by far- and I already expected it to look good!
