every now and then my desktop pc will stop and the screen starts flashing rainbow colors.  I have to restart my computer at that point.

it's not a BSOD but it appears to be the system crashing.  any thoughts on what is causing it and how to fix?

Hi, This BSOD Forum is not a Discussion Forum and if it is not where you wanted to be please say so.

You have missed the BSOD Posting Instructions : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-vista-through-to-11/

From a DOS Command Prompt from START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | select "Run as Administrator" then Copy/Paste --> :
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command then Enter     if it finds problems then reboot. (Completed Successfully : means reboot)
then
After : please Open another Admin Command Prompt and please run Copy/Paste --> SFC /SCANNOW into the Dos window or Powershell and Enter.  Reboot after.
The 1st goes up to Microsoft for new files if any are found to be corrupted. The 2nd will then check it self and update it self and fix issues if found.

Please Post a "link" of Speccy Report.   NOTE : Not a picture nor a File it is a URL

Use Custom Install
At the Top Left Corner of Speccy --> Click File and then Click Publish Snapshot Report, a window will popup and Click YES. --> Another popup will appear and then Click "Copy To Clipboard" then Paste that "link" to your next reply in your thread.

Download Minitoolbox from the below link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
-List last 10 Event viewer errors

Now click "Go" and Copy/Paste and post the output text in your next reply.  NOTE : is not a File nor is it to be posted in a Quote All Box.

Try this and let me know if it works:
1: Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause display issues. Update or reinstall the graphic drivers.
2: Check the cable connections
3: Go to the display settings and try resetting the color profile
4: Try  Win+Alt+B
5: If its AMD:
Reinstall the latest windows update
Activate color Deficiency correction in the Amd software
Go to windows color filters in windows settings and turn the filter off

@jollybgood been busy for a 1st time poster with no introduction.     All your info supplied is lacking information.  Mostly how to do so.

Your copy/paste or AI Generated info needs to be cited.  Eventually your posts will catch up with you.  But hey Welcome to BC

The most common solution is to update Windows and Device Drivers. Corrupted files cause the system to crash, so Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command sfc /scannow. With this, Windows system files will be scanned and repaired. Faulty or incompatible hardware can also cause this problem, so remove any hardware components that might be new.

@Sophytaylor  Resurrectionist posting in abandoned Topics is highly regraded as a habit that can get you banned as you have been warned of this already.

@Sophytaylor as above. It is IMMENSELY frustrating to open an updated thread only to find that it's a necro thread and someone has posted worthless cut & paste information. You're not making any friends on here, that's for sure.

When did 17 days become "thread necromancy"? Please guide me to the appropriate document that EXACTLY defines thread necromancy.

@Zyorron it's 20 days since the OP posted here, that's an age in BSOD and crash troubleshooting. In addition the OP was asked early on (post #4) to follow the BSOD posting instructions to give us the troubleshooting data that we would need to assist. They did not provide the requested data and never again returned to this thread.

Please guide me to the appropriate document that EXACTLY defines thread necromancy.

I am not aware of any such document but there is such a thing as forum etiquette and posting in abandoned or solved threads is deemed as necro posting.

Also worth a mention is that such behaviour is akin to spamming as necro posting foists unsolicited emails on an unsuspecting thread starter + anyone who has helped in the thread.

Necro posting has its own wiki or two, plenty of reading on the matter here
