Where We are Now

Al Mahdi Islamic Community Centre has been serving East Toronto with faith, learning, and community since the mid-1980s. What began with modest religious classes and Ramadhan programs has grown into a full spectrum of year-round services – Madressah, burial services, youth & ladies engagement, community and religious programming, and so much more.

The community outgrew its original property in Pickering, ON, many years ago. In 2004, a 4.1-acre site was purchased at Markham and Steeles in Toronto, ON, with the vision of building a mosque and community centre.

What’s Happening at the Site

After years of planning and preparation, the Al Mahdi community reached a major milestone on July 14, 2025, by signing a CCDC 5B construction contract with Arguson Projects Inc., ofﬁcially appointing them as the Construction Management Firm to lead the project. This decision followed a competitive bidding process with several qualiﬁed ﬁrms. With the contract in place, key consultants engaged, and ﬁnancing secured, construction commenced in August, 2025.

The site has since been secured with comprehensive safety measures, and site clearance completed. Arguson has already begun mobilizing trades, awarding contracts for excavation, site services, formwork, structural steel, and precast. With visible progress now taking shape, we are moving closer each day to achieving partial occupancy by December 2026, Inshallah.

1.0 First Stage – Partial Occupancy

Completion date: December 2026

Financials

The cost to reach partial occupancy is $15 million. Through the grace of Allah (SWT) and the generosity of our community, we have already made strong progress toward this goal:

$3.7 million currently in the bank
$700,000 in pledges
$5.2 million in interest-free community loans

This leaves us with a shortfall of $5.4 million to obtain partial occupancy. While ﬁnancing with interest is available, our strong preference is to avoid it and instead rely on the support of our community.
