Understanding ADHD

Comprehensive, evidence-based information about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and development.

Causes & Genetics

Research shows ADHD has strong genetic components, with heritability estimates around 70-80%. Environmental factors and brain development also play important roles.

Types & Presentations

ADHD presents in three main types: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined presentation, each with distinct characteristics.

Diagnosis & Assessment

Proper ADHD diagnosis requires comprehensive evaluation by qualified healthcare professionals, including clinical interviews, behavioral assessments, and standardized rating scales.

Meta-Analysis

Medication Effectiveness

Stimulant medications show strong efficacy for ADHD symptoms, with effect sizes of 0.9-1.0 for core symptoms in controlled trials.

Behavioral Interventions

Behavioral parent training and classroom interventions show moderate to large effect sizes for improving ADHD-related behaviors and functioning.

Long-term Outcomes

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are associated with better academic, social, and occupational outcomes in adulthood.

Combination Treatment

Combined medication and behavioral therapy approaches often provide optimal outcomes, particularly for children with complex presentations.
