Why doesn’t WP ask for donations?

If WordPress is suffering financially, why doesn’t WordPress ask for donations? Some of us have been using WP (self-hosted) for free for years (decades?!) Some plugins have gotten me to pay just by how useful they were, so why not solicit donations from loyal WordPress (self hosted version) users?

I’m not talking about a paywall or crippling features, just a not too in-your-face “hey, we are trying to make a living here, how about a little something?”

If there’s a way to do so already, it’s too well hidden.
