This is the best country access restriction out there. Not having it (it has also been removed from wpackagist) has been a pain since I use it to manage access restrictions on over 2 dozen client sites.
Is it coming back soon, or do I have to look for another solution?
Pascal committed some changes about 3 hours ago so he is clearly working on it. I suspect he had to take some extra time to test the changes with the newly release WP 6.0.
Is this even a valid security concern? Does keeping the plugin enabled compromise sites?
As I understand (please correct me), bypassing the block by spoofing an IP address is less than or equal to (in the extreme) of disabling the plugin. It’s security through obscurity. The worst case scenario in using the plugin is believing in it absolutely and not being vigilant vs understanding it’s just another layer that provides some protection but shouldn’t be relied on on its own.
From Pascal’s website (emphasis mine):
[…] WordPress reviewed the code after a small security issue was found […] (which was fixed in last update).
They found some other issues as well relating to “Best Practices” […]
I am currently working as hard as I can on updating the code […]
So no worries if you currently use the the plugin it is safe to keep using it, the project has not been abandoned […]
I am sorry but I cannot respond to everyone who has mailed as I obviously rather spend that time improving the plugin.
