Hi
Updating a theme replaces the theme files. This is why it is always recommended to not edit theme files directly and why you are always reminded about how important it is to make regular backups of your website. This is not only true for this theme but for all themes and sites.
I recommend contacting your web host to see if there is a backup you can restore.
Changes made in the WordPress admin interface like the Site Editor, as opposed to the files, should not be affected by a theme update. These changes are saved in the database and are not reset by theme updates.

@poena that’s the thing – all changes were done via the Site Editor. None of the files nor the database were edited, as I don’t have these skills. I painstakingly went through the process of customizing the theme using the Site Editor. That’s why I thought changes would not be affected by the update. Yet here we are. So what can a guy do when edits using the Site Editor get overriden upon the theme update?
